A new blog post for our students

Last week I received truly special news from my teacher in Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate.

Hanshi Patrick McCarthy has awarded me the rank of Yondan (4th Dan) and the teaching title of Shidoin within Koryu Uchinadi.

This recognition reflects not only years of physical training, but also deep study into the art’s history, pedagogy, and philosophy. The path of Karate demands both pen and sword, training body, mind, and spirit alike.

As my wife Lynne reminded me, every choice along the way, some small, some life-changing, led me here. Embracing practical, principle-based Karate under true mentors has shaped my practice and reaffirmed that being on the right path means finding the right people, place, and purpose.

Since beginning my journey in 1994, I’ve been fortunate to learn from exceptional teachers some right here in Scotland, some further afield and to share those lessons through Edinburgh Koryukan / Bun Bu Ryo do, alongside Lynne and our dedicated students.

This year marks 10 years since our dojo first opened its doors. Seeing students of all ages embody the spirit of Koryu Uchinadi and keep traditional Okinawan Karate alive in Scotland is a true privilege.

I’m deeply grateful to Hanshi McCarthy for his trust and mentorship, and to everyone in the KU and wider martial arts community who continues to inspire growth, friendship, and shared purpose.
