A return to league action for Glasgow yesterday who took on former GCCL companions Glasgow Wednesday.

Glasgow got off to a flier with a couple of early goals through Mo Saleh and Reiss Tallon, assisted by Amman Amjad and Seb Maksymiuk respectively (lovely goals, even better assists). The 3rd came shortly after, this time through Sam MacRae, however for the remainder of the half it was Glasgow Wednesday who looked the more dangerous. After a number of chances and a POTM performance from Dylan to keep them out, Wednesday finally got on the scoresheet bringing the score to 3-1 at the break.

A halftime team talk along the lines of “we’re not playing very well eh” injected a bit more quality, with Mo netting his 2nd of the day and and 6th of the season, making things a little more comfortable. A better 2nd half performance kept Glasgow in front for the remainder, making it 10 points out of 12 in an unbeaten start to the season.

A win which takes Glasgow to the top of the table, something described by assistant gaffer Ronan as the best thing that happened to him yesterday. Fortunately out of earshot of most in attendance at his wedding…congrats btw.

Before we return to league action this Sunday, here’s a look back at last weekend’s Sunday Trophy first round tie.

A 4 hour round trip to Dumfries was the first challenge of the day, with everybody arriving on time being the biggest win of the afternoon. A decent start was knocked back slightly after Dumfries took the lead with a lovely finish, however a Mo Saleh double was a good response, taking us into half time 2-1 up.

The second half brought more chances, most of which were hit directly at the keeper (although one of those saves in particular was class, fair play) but Mo completed his hat trick mid way through the second half. In the spirit of making things as difficult as possible, Glasgow conceded two in quick succession, one from a penalty, and one from rubbish defending. After missing a couple more chances as we approached the looming penalty shootout, a Dumfries red card (probably a yellow, but I’m saying nothing) gave Glasgow a bit of energy, and in the 96th minute Luke Olivier was brought down in the box after a bursting run forward, with Sam MacRae slotting home the winner. A couple more minutes of stoppage time and a chaotic block to deny an equaliser from the Dumfries goalie who came up for a free kick made it interesting at the end, but Saints went back up the road and into the hat for the next round. Fun game, but daft.

With no games across the GDSFC today (probably because of the Dundee derby or something) we’ve got a bit of time to look back on last week’s Glasgow result.

Glasgow maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 6-1 win against Kelvingrovers. After a positive start, a long ball over the top bamboozled the Glasgow defence leading to a Kelvingrovers openener. The ship was quickly steadied, and a delightful Stevie Marshall ball lined up a Sam MacRae equaliser before Sam decided scoring wasn’t enough, assisting Mattan Wallace in putting Saints ahead. A Kelvingrovers red card just before half time left room for Saints to pile on a bit of pressure, and Mattan wasted no time in the second half, grabbing his second quickly after the restart.

Amman Amjad added to the scoreline with his first Saints goal, closely followed by Reiss Tallon getting in on the action by adding a 5th. The goals for the day were rounded off with another “first in Saints colours”, this time by Mo Saleh (not bad considering up until 30 mins before kick off he thought the game was at the other side of Glasgow). A 6-1 win adding another 3 points to the board, we’ll take that.

Cup action next week as we take the trip to Dumfries!
