⚡️ 10 WEEKS OF RAPID! ⚡️

This week we wrap up our 10-week summer project.

And the best part? We’re already seeing the training turn up where it actually matters: in competition. 🏃‍♀️⚽️🏉

Junior footballers carrying their speed and intensity deeper into games. Rugby players producing repeated high-speed efforts and making an impact across the full 80. Athletes starting the season fitter, faster and better equipped to keep producing when others begin to fade.

That doesn’t happen without commitment.

A huge thank you to every athlete who turned up, worked hard and trusted the programme. You’ve earned the explosive start many of you are now enjoying. 👏

I hope you’ve enjoyed following the journey and found some of the training, testing and coaching behind RAPID! interesting.

Want to see what a properly structured speed & conditioning programme could do for you or your young athlete?

I’m available to build the programme. You put in the work. Then we measure what changes. 📈⚡️

⚡️ ONE KICK-OFF. 1/2 A CHANCE. ONE TRY.

This is what REPEAT speed looks like when it actually changes a game.

Saturday afternoon for - Olney restart. Gregor takes it cleanly, drives forward, spots the space and kicks ahead. He wins the chase, controls it with another kick and finishes the move himself.

Phase 1. Try. 🏉⚡️

I wrote Gregor’s off-season Speed Project with a clear goal: develop a genuinely intimidating running fullback, with the conditioning to bring this kind of threat again and again for the full 80 minutes.

Not just top-end speed. Repeat sprint ability. The capacity to keep hurting teams with pace deep into a game.

Has the training worked? You can decide. 👀

💥 BIG MAN. BIG CARRY.

Yet another rampaging run from Matt on Friday night for

Used as an attacking weapon through midfield, the 2nd row takes the ball at pace, punches through the first contact and keeps driving through tackles for 20+ metres.

This is what we’re working towards in strength training: turning a big, powerful forward into a genuinely dynamic ball-carrying threat.

Power. Momentum. Repeat. 🏉💨

Great work from the big man. 👊

⚽️ Proud to support Hitchin Belles U13s for a second season. 💙

A positive, ethical team with high-quality coaching, and a great culture around the girls.

They played their first pre-season game together as a squad this week (promoted) and played very well. Girls who committed to RAPID! preseason looked relentless right to final whistle. Terrific win. With new players moving from Hitchin Belles Whites into the Blues to strengthen the side, there’s plenty to be encouraged by for the season ahead. 👏⚽️

Glad for Body-Technix to play a small part in supporting their development. 💙

🩰 THINK. THINK. THINK. THEN MOVE. ⚡️🧠

At RAPID! I’m constantly asking our young athletes to visualise where their body is in space.

🦵 Knees high
🦶 Ankles dorsiflexed
🧍 Chest neutral
👤 Chin controlled
💪 Arms driving at the right angles

And during drills I want them thinking about those positions every single repetition.

Think of a ballet dancer working at the barre 🩰

They repeat precise positions and movements again and again until those shapes become natural, controlled and automatic.

Sprint drills work in much the same way.

🧠 Think the position
👀 Visualise it
🎯 Hit the shape
🔁 Repeat it
⚡ Then let it become running

We’re not just warming up or going through movements. We’re rehearsing positions and teaching the brain and body where we want the limbs to be.

The goal is simple:

Think it. Feel it. Repeat it. Then let it become instinct. ⚡️

⚡️ STOP LEAKING SPEED SIDEWAYS.

Ever watched your child run and thought, “They’re quick… but something just doesn’t look quite right?”

Sometimes it isn’t about trying harder or getting stronger. It’s about helping their body use the speed and power they already have more efficiently.

One of the repeat patterns I’ve been ironing out with a few of the youngsters at RAPID! is arm action.

When we sprint, the arms aren’t just along for the ride.

A common flaw is allowing the arms to swing across the sternum, creating unnecessary rotation through the upper body. Instead of helping propel the athlete forwards, some of that energy starts leaking sideways.

Good arm action helps counterbalance the knee drive, control unwanted rotation and keep the body focused on one thing:

➡️ MOVING FORWARDS. FAST.

It’s a relatively small technical change, but repeat it over hundreds of strides and those small improvements matter.

That’s a big part of RAPID! ⚡️

Not simply getting youngsters to run harder.

Teaching them to run better.

Stealing a yard in training doesn’t make the session easier. It just makes the result less honest (for yourself AND the team!)👀

The cone isn’t a suggestion. It’s been carefully calculated. Hit the distance, make the turn, earn the recovery. Because when competition arrives, there are no imaginary shortcuts.

And yes… coach sees everything. 😂⏱️

⚽️ BUILDING THE ENGINE, NOT JUST THE FASTEST PLAYERS

I’ve been working with the coach of Hitchin Belles FC U13 girls’ football squad to turn fitness testing into something genuinely useful.

The data showed two things: a big difference in running performance between the top and developing players in the squad, plus some really clear gulfs between groups of players.

So I’ve written a 6-week running programme with two simple objectives:

📈 Raise the squad’s mean running speed
↔️ Close the performance gulfs

The aim isn’t to make everyone identical. It’s to raise the physical floor while continuing to push the ceiling.

More players capable of repeatedly pressing, recovering and transitioning at intensity means a more competitive team for longer.

Test → identify → individualise → train → retest.
