1000 KATA CHALLENGE – WHAT A DAY!

What an incredible day at Kaizen Martial Arts Academy! The turnout, atmosphere and determination shown by everyone made it something really special.

When Clare and I first took over Kaizen, this is exactly the sort of day we hoped for. We wanted to build more than a place to learn martial arts. We wanted a community where people support one another and where we can make a real difference beyond the dojo.

Seeing everyone pull together today was genuinely emotional for us both. It made us realise what we’re building together.

Our goal was 1,000 kata. We finished on an amazing 1,262!

And when we passed that 1,000th kata, we’d raised £2,416.35 for Candlelighters. That total has continued to rise since!

A huge well done to every student and instructor who took part. A special mention to everyone who completed 50 kata individually – a fantastic achievement.

And an extra shout out to John Crossley Sensei and Ethan O’Connell Sensei, who each managed an incredible 100 kata. What an effort!

Thank you to all the friends and family who came along, everyone who donated, and those who watched and encouraged us on the YouTube livestream. Your support meant so much.

Every single person who took part helped make today happen, and you should all feel proud.

At Kaizen, our values are Discipline, Growth, Respect and Community. Today we saw all four in action.

Clare and I couldn’t be prouder. Days like today remind us exactly why we took on Kaizen in the first place.

Thank you all.

Chris & Clare

Students of the Quarter – July to September 2026

We’re pleased to announce our Students of the Quarter for July to September.

Junior Student of the Quarter
Elodie Pell

Senior Student of the Quarter
Elwood Baker

These awards are voted for by our Instructor Dan Grades, who consider seven key areas:

Effort, Energy, Enthusiasm, Commitment, Behaviour, Improvement and Respect.

The awards aren’t necessarily about who has the highest grade or the best technique, but about recognising students who consistently work hard, show the right attitude and make a positive contribution to the club.

A big congratulations to Elodie and Elwood. Both have shown great qualities throughout the quarter and thoroughly deserve this recognition.

Well done to you both, and keep up the good work!

1,000 KATA. ONE COMMUNITY. ONE GREAT CAUSE.

On Sunday 11th October, Kaizen students of all ages will come together to take on our 1,000 Kata Challenge, raising money for Candlelighters, supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire.

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve already raised over £700 - but can we reach £1000?

Every £5, £10, £20 sponsorship pushes that total higher and gives our students even more motivation to keep going through all 1,000 katas.

Courage in Karate 🥋

Some say courage is the most important virtue because without it, we struggle to practise any of the other virtues consistently.

The same is true in karate.

It takes courage to walk into the dojo for the first time.
Courage to train when you’re tired.
Courage to attempt something you might get wrong.
Courage to stand in front of others and perform your kata.
Courage to grade knowing you might not pass.
Courage to face someone better than you in kumite.
And sometimes, courage simply to turn up when your confidence is low.

Anyone can show discipline when they feel motivated. Anyone can persevere when things are going well.

The real test is whether you can keep doing those things consistently when they become difficult.

Karate isn’t about being fearless. Courage is feeling the nerves, doubt or discomfort - and stepping forward anyway.

Every time we do that, we develop something far more important than a better punch or kick.

We develop character!

🥋 JUNIOR SHOTOKAN KARATE KYU GRADING 🥋

A brilliant morning at Kaizen for our Junior Shotokan Karate Kyu Grading!

There were definitely a few nerves at the start, but they soon settled and we saw some great technique, focus and plenty of energy throughout the grading.

A huge congratulations to:

🥋 Alexander Brown – 9th Mon 🔴⚪
🥋 Mason Ajayi – 9th Kyu 🔴
🥋 Franky Wos – 8th Mon 🟡⚪
🥋 Elodie Pell – 7th Mon 🟠⚪
🥋 Dorian Kosicki – 6th Kyu 🟢
🥋 Patrick Wos – 6th Kyu 🟢

A special mention for Alexander, completing his very first karate grading today. He really packs a punch! 👊

These kids are the future of Kaizen, and today marked an important milestone for two of them. After a gradual integration into our Senior Shotokan classes, Dorian and Patrick have now completed their final Junior grading and officially joined the Senior class. A big step in their karate journey and one they have both worked hard for.

A massive thank you to today’s grading panel for giving their time, experience and support to our young karateka:

🥋 John Crossley Sensei – 3rd Dan
🥋 Claire Hardwick Sensei – 2nd Dan
🥋 Amber Hardwick Sensei – 1st Dan

And finally, a huge thank you to all our parents. Your commitment - getting them to training week after week, supporting them through the nerves and encouraging them to keep going - is absolutely vital to their development at Kaizen. We couldn’t do it without you!

Well done to everyone who graded today!
