Sometimes, the red flags don’t look red at first.

In a recent session with girls and young women, we explored a scenario that sounded harmless: “My boyfriend texts me ‘good morning’ every day because he wants to be the first thing I think about when I wake up.” Nothing wrong in that perhaps? Quite sweet really. Maybe. But what happens when those messages become constant check-ins: “Just texting to say I’m thinking of you!” Or when not replying instantly leads to sulking, guilt, or pressure to prove you care?

That’s where the conversation shifted. What can look like affection may also be an early sign of control.

Young people aren’t born knowing how to spot these patterns. Our instincts might scream otherwise, but social conditioning, religious teachings, peer pressure and romanticised ideas of love can all make red flag behaviour harder to see.

That’s why these conversations matter, and that’s why they need to be a part of any girls’ self-defence training.

Violence thrives in silence. Connection creates protection.

One of the most powerful — and often overlooked — principles of empowerment self-defence is “Tell.”

Knowing who to tell, and trusting that you’ll be believed, supported, and never shamed, can make all the difference. It not only helps recovery after a traumatic experience, but can also shine a light on red-flag behaviour before it escalates.
When we share our stories, we realise we’re not alone. And when voices come together, they create strength, support, and change.

Recently, I adapted this principle for a group of 7–11-year-old girls. Using a fun, age-appropriate game and real-life scenarios, we explored who they could turn to if something didn’t feel right.

This is what teaching self-defence to young girls looks like: helping them recognise unhealthy behaviour, trust their instincts, and know that speaking up is a strength.

✨ “We are powerful.” ✨ Sometimes we just need a little reminder of the strength, resilience, and power we already carry.

Last week I had the pleasure of supporting my friend and fellow empowerment self defence instructor Maya .space at her workshop at The Bridge in London.

It’s always a joy to work alongside Maya — she has this calm, steady strength that instantly helps people feel comfortable. I always leave her sessions having learned something new or with a fresh idea sparked!

And sadly we didn’t manage to grab a photo of us in her very cool T shirts… so you’ll just have to picture it 😄💪

Are these just messy squiggles, or could they be your first self-defence lesson? This drawing came from a lively session with girls aged 9–10, as we explored which parts of the body are vulnerable and which are strong enough to use in self-defence. It's all about empowering young girls to protect themselves with confidence!

We teach whole-person empowerment — awareness, boundary-setting, de-escalation and simple physical responses — so you leave feeling calmer, clearer and more confident. Our trauma-informed, evidence-based approach has helped past participants across the East Midlands report measurable gains: higher situational confidence and ways to manage their anxiety.

As an instructor with experience of teaching a wide range of participants, I will tailor the material to suit you, and support steady progress at your pace.

Very excited to be delivering a series of self-defence sessions starting today for Safe and Sound, a Derby-based charity that tackles child exploitation by raising awareness, providing 1-1 and group support and activities and education for families, young people and professionals working in this area.

We will be delivering 6 sessions of empowerment self-defence to their afterschool girls' group, teaching not just physical skills but increasing awareness of risk, effective boundary-setting and verbal skills to assert themselves amongst other exciting topics!
