Rein back is a great training tool when asked for correctly, but you all know this cos I bang on about it lol 😝
Walking backwards - rein back - step back
This has always been an exercise I recommend and a recent article has used 3D motion capture to explore back and pelvis motion during the movement - Jobst, Zsoldos and Licka, 2024
'A significantly larger maximum and a greater ROM was reached between the withers, thoracic region and sacrum (labelled D-angWmT16S2) in Backwards Walking compared to Forwards walking, indicating a lifting of the back, an effect necessary to facilitate strengthening of the horse’s core and therefore often desired in equine physiotherapy and in equestrian sports (Clayton, 2016; Shakeshaft & Tabor, 2020)'
A few steps backwards - Unmount SD Cardnted - as part of groundwork and before mounting are a really good idea to mobilise your horse's back.

What a fantastic achievement & another horse friendly step forward for our sport 🤩💪🐴😍
Lithuanian Justina Vanagaite is understood to be the first rider to compete at top level international dressage without spurs since the FEI rule change came into force this year giving riders the choice. At the Doha CDI5* last weekend Justina and Nabab were seventh in the grand prix on 69.78%, and then the pair put in a superb freestyle performance to score 75.75% and land a place on the podium. Congratulations Justina!

A great day of BHS CPD at The Talland School of Equitation, really loved the theme of managing risks in a practical and positive way so that we don’t accidentally avoid them altogether and inadvertently restrict progress! Setting reasonable levels of challenge in order to become fantastic alround riders is something I’ve always believed in!
A refreshing take on what after all is a risky sport! I’m looking forward to sharing it with all of my wonderful clients 😊💪⭐️

Do you agree with this? I live by it, so important to think about both yourself and the horse when trying to make improvements and progress 🐎
