September Update
Another quick month has come and gone, but there has been plenty going on at Scoonie.
We thought we had our full fleet of machinery upgraded, but just to complete the package, we welcomed the arrival of our new Iseki tractor. This is very welcome at this time of year, as we can attach our new blower to help us keep on top of the leaves falling from the trees.
Unfortunately, Scoonie is quite open, with plenty of trees around the course, which can make blowing the leaves quite difficult. For now, where possible, the leaves will be blown into the long rough and boundaries of the course. Where this isn’t possible, we will try to keep them within the tree lines, giving players a fair chance of finding their ball in the rough.
Ideally, going forward, we would have something that could collect the leaves from underneath the trees once they have all fallen.
There has also been plenty of backpack blowing carried out on tees, greens, bunkers and anywhere the tractor would struggle to get into.
The greens received a double verticut, which was carried out over two lovely afternoons with minimum disruption to play. Most of the approaches have also been verticut, and everything is already showing good signs of recovery.
We have also kept on top of bunker strimming, tee signs, yardage markers and any shin rail fencing that needed attention.
The new machinery is proving to be a big hit with the greenstaff. The only thing that has proved difficult is dealing with worm casts on the tees and approaches. Hopefully, going forward, we will be able to get scrapers fitted to the rollers to help prevent the build-up of worm casts.
There is definitely a change in temperature now, with September seeing around 55mm of rain, an average high of 16°C and an average low of 8°C.
October we have some greens maintenance planned but with minimum disruption. Golfers will be made aware in advance.
