Why is walking one of our favourite exercises? 🚶‍♀️ We know, it sounds almost too simple to be a "real" workout. But trust us, this one's a bit of a secret weapon and we want you getting more of it in your week (if you're able to):

A leaner take on a classic spaghetti bolognese 🍝 High in protein, full of hidden veg, and on the table in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients (serves 4)

500g lean beef mince (5% fat)
1 onion, finely chopped
2 carrots, grated
2 courgettes, grated
3 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tins chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp tomato purée
1 tsp mixed herbs
Splash of Worcestershire sauce
Spaghetti, or courgetti for a low carb swap

Method✨

Brown the mince in a dry non-stick pan, breaking it up as you go, 5-6 minutes. Drain off any fat.
Finely chop the onion and garlic, grate the carrot and courgette, and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
Stir in the tomatoes, purée, herbs and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cook your spaghetti according to the pack instructions and serve the sauce on top.

Low carb swap: Spiralise 2 courgettes per person and sauté in a dry pan for 2-3 minutes until just tender, don't overcook or it goes watery. Spoon the bolognese straight on top, just like normal spaghetti.

After member Val badly fractured her wrist in January, and after surgery and 3 months in splints and casts, she finally got the go ahead to return to the gym. Since then, Val's recovery has been amazing, thanks to Becky's patience and determination in helping her work different muscles and rebuild strength and flexibility.

It's National Fitness Day 2026 and this year's theme is Powered by You, so we want you to bring a friend in and show them what you love about Gymophobics🩷

From Monday 14th to Sunday 20th September, bring a friend along for a FREE trial session. No pressure, just come and try the circuit together✨

And if they love it and sign up for an annual membership, you'll each get a month free!🎉

Trial sessions need to be booked in advance with participating Gymophobics, just pop in, call or message us to grab a slot that week.

✨Meet Kathryn from Gymophobics Hatfield✨

After feeling run down and slowly losing her strength and energy, Kathryn decided it was time to make a change. Just a few months later, she was already feeling more like herself again☺️
Here's what Kathryn had to say about her journey with Gymophobics:

“I came to the gym after slowly becoming very deconditioned over a period of 18 months and I was beginning to feel quite unwell. After only a few months I started to feel more my old self with my previous levels of energy and strength.

I never thought going to the gym would become my favourite part of the day, but the friendly and welcoming atmosphere is a great asset. The staff know everyone well, are always so positive and regularly update our programmes."

"I'M TOO OLD TO START NOW" ... 👵
It's probbaly one of the biggest excuses we tell ourselves with a lot of new things: a new language, playing an instrument and even exercise.

✨So we looked at the actual research. Here's what 3 major studies found:

A 2019 study of over 315,000 people (Saint-Maurice et al., JAMA Network Open) found that people who only started exercising in their 40s, 50s, and 60s had a 35% lower risk of early death, almost identical to people who'd been active their whole lives.

A 2023 study of over 22,000 people aged 80+ (Yan et al., Preventive Medicine) found that people who went from sedentary to active, even in their 80s and even with existing health conditions, still lived longer than those who stayed sedentary. Lead researcher Prof. Lijing Yan put it simply: "It's never too late to start. The key is to get active."

A 2025 review of 85 studies covering 7 million people (Yu et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine) found that people who switched from inactive to active were 22% less likely to die from any cause, and those who simply moved more saw a 27% drop in mortality risk.

The takeaway is the same every time: your body doesn't care what age you start. It rewards you either way.🎉
