Tonight was awesome to get out of the gym and party with them! Sadly we didnโt win, but getting to this point and being shortlisted for Strength Training Gym of the Year is an incredible reflection on the hard work they put in week in, week out!

Since I first stepped into a gym with my uncle when I was 12 (22 years agoโฆ ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ) Iโve been obsessed with strength! Getting stronger, the process of getting stronger, the constant unchangeable that is a kilo. It fascinates me that we can train and condition our bodies to get stronger and to overcome objects and to add more of those little illusive kilos to bars, dumbbells, kettlebells, ourselves!
More so than having this ability is the process that fascinated me (and still does!) the quest for knowledge on how we get stronger and how do we get more powerful? What makes this work or that bigger? is bigger better/stronger? Why? All questions Iโve asked, been asked and continue to research and answer, with varying levels of frustration when I discover something Iโve been doing isnโt as effective as it could beโฆ (the joys of continued education and research!)
In short, the answer I give when Iโm asked โWhy strength?โ Is โBecause this s**t makes my soul sing!โ And it really does! I love it, itโs something that has provided a port in many storms personally and is something I am privileged to share with others and see the results! Itโs more than a passion, itโs an obsession! Itโs the reason I opened Red Beard Barbell and is the reason we will continue doing what we do and spreading the joy of strength training to as many men, women, kids and everyone in between as we can for as long as we can!
Get booked in for a trial session and see what the fuss is about, perhaps youโll catch the same bug for strength, perhaps youโll fall in love with the welcoming family of lunatics whom frequent the barn, or maybe youโll welcome the challenge of finding those kilos!
A kilo will always be a kilo. Thereโs something quite comforting in that fact, the constant in a world of uncertainty.

Grip is a vastly underestimated weapon in the arsenal of any strength athlete, and yet it is often the ignored accessory but at the end of a sessionโฆ
Tips / exercises for improving grip that require literally no extra equipment than youโd find in a standard gym:
๐๐ป Only use straps for deadlifts, rows etc when you physically canโt grip the weight, stop using straps in warm up sets!
๐๐ป Hanging from a pull-up bar is great for working grip and is easy to superset with just about anything.
๐๐ป Pinch two plates together and hold them trying to avoid any ridges that may help (if youโve access to steel plates, turn them face to face) and pick up for reps or time.
๐๐ป Wrap your thumbโฆ your thumb makes up a vast portion of your grip strength and yet people are still wondering why they dump max efforts whilst using a su***de gripโฆ
๐๐ป Pick up dumbells by the lump, not the handle!
๐๐ป Use chalk! Chalk aids your grip by eliminating moisture, which allows you to hang on for longer, thus working the muscles and such that are used in grip harder (time in tension)
There are a barrage of ways to work grip, but these are sone of the more simple and effective ways that I like!

Super proud of how far heโs come in such a short space of time, from joining the club having never touched a log and with a 130kg deadlift. To now going for 130kg log and 300kg deadlift!!!

Bit of a soppy one, fair warning!
This picture right here pretty much sums up my life. My wife, my daughter and my club, in the carpark of the Jolly, a pub I hold very dear to me and my family for all they did to help my brother and my dad when they needed it, and for all they continue to do for me and my family now!
Charlotte, for putting up with me being a dick and stressing about running the comps and for running the scores (which is one of the most stressful jobs at a comp!) as well as everything else she does. The kid, currently a bit of a leech, but ya know, sheโs cuts and all! (Sheโs also 2, give her another year and sheโll be down the mines to help pay for the heating bill!)
And my club, that Iโve grafted through 3 1/2 years of growth and incredible memories and have created more family than I ever knew I had!
I love everything about this picture, I look forward to seeing how it changes and moves forward over the years to when Beatrix is stood on a podium herself, or has tan miles away from such a daft idea entirely!! ๐ช๐ป

One of my goals at Red Beard Barbell is to encourage more women to get into strength sports and enjoy the benefits of this incredible community!
Last year we ran the Jolly Comp as our first ever strongman competition, we had 26 competitors, 6 of those were women.
This year we had 44 competitors and 18 were women!!
We still have a long way to go, but this is an amazing thing not just for strength sports that I love so dearly, but for women in strength sports!
Get involved and next year, letโs get the categories filled up with strongwomen!

50 local Strongmen and Strongwomen putting on a show for you and the family, food and drink available all day and free access for spectators!!
First event lift off by 10am, comp over by 2.30pm!

had a great comp and added 5kg to her deadlift with 105kg!
then stole the show with records across the board, English Deadlift record and Bench record in the sun junior -53kg class!!
