Charlie Red Beard Barbell Club says it is chalk dust, but that is to cover up his magic powers. In this photo, he has summoned up a complete athlete just using the thought that he used to chunk movements and use accessory exercises because "experts" told him to do that to pass a course!

(now he uses actually researched techniques based on motor learning theory)

S A T U R D A Y Session

Hereโ€™s a little weights workout you can bust out this weekend if you are into clean and jerks.

Itโ€™s been a little while for me with this lift, I have a lot of work still to do, but Iโ€™m really pleased I managed to push them up ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

I also cooked a roast dinner whilst training, so you know, just multi tasking over here!

5 rounds focusing on tekkers:
5 x Clean and jerk ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ increasing the weight with each round

4 rounds:
10 x Slam ball over shoulder @ 50% bodyweight
10 x Press ups

And then my roast potatoes were very crispy so I had to call it a day ๐Ÿ˜‚

The clean and jerk is a hugely technical lift with a lot of moving parts. I got taught this lift by Charlie at Red Beard Barbell Club so if you are keen to add Olympic lifts into your training, you definitely need to get taught how to do them to understand the moves, the technique, to perform them safely and to build your confidence.

In two weeks time the Base Competition Team will be stepping onto the platform for the first time in a Powerlifting Competition at Red Beard Barbell Club
Today the comp team met up under Head Coach Gareth to set their start weights for the Squat/Bench/Deadlift.
At Base we encourage members to try new sports both in and outside of the gym.

If you are unfamiliar with exercise, you donโ€™t know how to squat, lunge, deadlift, overhead press, press up, bench press et donโ€™t know where to begin or how to learn how to execute these exercises correctly so you feel them in the right muscle groups and how to progress them, then getting someone to teach you all of that is the safest, most effective and time efficient way to learn.

Recently I have been learning Olympic lifts with Red Beard Barbell Club

I wouldnโ€™t feel confident just trying to teach myself these lifts. It would be dangerous, I would get them very wrong and I would have no way of knowing if I was executing them correctly.

I could spend months and months getting these really wrong and possibly injuring myself, but instead I spent a session being taught move by move how to execute this lift.

There was a lot of squeeling and laughing each time I missed a movement that failed the lift, but it was great fun learning, and now I have hours and hours of practise ahead knowing how to execute this lift and feeling when it is right and wrong.

Being taught was the safest, most time efficient way for me to learn.

Always be a white belt with the most effective route to your goals being coaching.

Tonight was awesome to get out of the gym and party with them! Sadly we didnโ€™t win, but getting to this point and being shortlisted for Strength Training Gym of the Year is an incredible reflection on the hard work they put in week in, week out!

Since I first stepped into a gym with my uncle when I was 12 (22 years agoโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ) Iโ€™ve been obsessed with strength! Getting stronger, the process of getting stronger, the constant unchangeable that is a kilo. It fascinates me that we can train and condition our bodies to get stronger and to overcome objects and to add more of those little illusive kilos to bars, dumbbells, kettlebells, ourselves!

More so than having this ability is the process that fascinated me (and still does!) the quest for knowledge on how we get stronger and how do we get more powerful? What makes this work or that bigger? is bigger better/stronger? Why? All questions Iโ€™ve asked, been asked and continue to research and answer, with varying levels of frustration when I discover something Iโ€™ve been doing isnโ€™t as effective as it could beโ€ฆ (the joys of continued education and research!)

In short, the answer I give when Iโ€™m asked โ€œWhy strength?โ€ Is โ€œBecause this s**t makes my soul sing!โ€ And it really does! I love it, itโ€™s something that has provided a port in many storms personally and is something I am privileged to share with others and see the results! Itโ€™s more than a passion, itโ€™s an obsession! Itโ€™s the reason I opened Red Beard Barbell and is the reason we will continue doing what we do and spreading the joy of strength training to as many men, women, kids and everyone in between as we can for as long as we can!

Get booked in for a trial session and see what the fuss is about, perhaps youโ€™ll catch the same bug for strength, perhaps youโ€™ll fall in love with the welcoming family of lunatics whom frequent the barn, or maybe youโ€™ll welcome the challenge of finding those kilos!

A kilo will always be a kilo. Thereโ€™s something quite comforting in that fact, the constant in a world of uncertainty.



Grip is a vastly underestimated weapon in the arsenal of any strength athlete, and yet it is often the ignored accessory but at the end of a sessionโ€ฆ

Tips / exercises for improving grip that require literally no extra equipment than youโ€™d find in a standard gym:

๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Only use straps for deadlifts, rows etc when you physically canโ€™t grip the weight, stop using straps in warm up sets!
๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Hanging from a pull-up bar is great for working grip and is easy to superset with just about anything.
๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Pinch two plates together and hold them trying to avoid any ridges that may help (if youโ€™ve access to steel plates, turn them face to face) and pick up for reps or time.
๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Wrap your thumbโ€ฆ your thumb makes up a vast portion of your grip strength and yet people are still wondering why they dump max efforts whilst using a su***de gripโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Pick up dumbells by the lump, not the handle!
๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Use chalk! Chalk aids your grip by eliminating moisture, which allows you to hang on for longer, thus working the muscles and such that are used in grip harder (time in tension)

There are a barrage of ways to work grip, but these are sone of the more simple and effective ways that I like!

Bit of a soppy one, fair warning!

This picture right here pretty much sums up my life. My wife, my daughter and my club, in the carpark of the Jolly, a pub I hold very dear to me and my family for all they did to help my brother and my dad when they needed it, and for all they continue to do for me and my family now!

Charlotte, for putting up with me being a dick and stressing about running the comps and for running the scores (which is one of the most stressful jobs at a comp!) as well as everything else she does. The kid, currently a bit of a leech, but ya know, sheโ€™s cuts and all! (Sheโ€™s also 2, give her another year and sheโ€™ll be down the mines to help pay for the heating bill!)
And my club, that Iโ€™ve grafted through 3 1/2 years of growth and incredible memories and have created more family than I ever knew I had!

I love everything about this picture, I look forward to seeing how it changes and moves forward over the years to when Beatrix is stood on a podium herself, or has tan miles away from such a daft idea entirely!! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

One of my goals at Red Beard Barbell is to encourage more women to get into strength sports and enjoy the benefits of this incredible community!
Last year we ran the Jolly Comp as our first ever strongman competition, we had 26 competitors, 6 of those were women.
This year we had 44 competitors and 18 were women!!

We still have a long way to go, but this is an amazing thing not just for strength sports that I love so dearly, but for women in strength sports!
