🏆 Over 55s Cup Match Report 🏆

This week the Over 55s were in cup action against Beamish. After last year's successful run, the lads were in a buoyant mood and hoping to go all the way once again.

Beamish, however, came with a strong game plan, fielding several players off the highest possible handicaps, and that ultimately proved to be the difference.

The opening match saw Michael Farrey and Ronnie Simpson battle hard to earn a valuable half point.

The highlight of the day for Whickham was an excellent 5&4 victory from Paul Haste and Jamie Robson, who were in control throughout.

Paul Fawcus and Dave Smith narrowly lost by 2 holes, closely followed by myself and Paul Hedley, who went down 3&2. Tony Loadman and John Brown suffered a 4&3 defeat.

Geordie Pratt and Geoff Whing continued their impressive form with another great performance, securing a 2&1 win, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to swing the overall result.

Final Score: Whickham 5 – 7 Beamish

Attention now turns to our next fixture, an away trip to Ryton, where we'll be looking to bounce back and get back to winning ways. ⛳💪

Michael Nesbit claimed the pro trophy with 40 points.

The winning team went to our own Team Rachel - Rachel Cooper, Allison Stone and Andrew Lockwood and pro Jamie Herdman, pipping last years winning team, the Whickham Wags by a point.

✅ WGC men’s team 12-2 Beamish Park Golf Club ✅

The men’s team stayed in the mix at the right end of the table after a very impressive win over a strong Beamish team on Tuesday night.

A short trip awaits up the road to local rivals Hobson Golf Club next Tuesday, all support welcome! ⛳️

Over 55s Match Report – Seaham Away

This week the Over 55s travelled to Seaham, a team we had already beaten in both the league and cup. They were clearly out for revenge – and unfortunately, they got it, with Whickham suffering a tough 9-3 defeat.

The highlight of the day came from Michael Farrey and Ronnie Simpson, who secured an excellent 2&1 victory to get us off to a flying start.

After that, reality hit hard. Tony Loadman and John Brown battled all the way but narrowly lost on the final hole, losing 1 down. Jamie Robson and Phil Old showed great character, fighting back from 4 down after just 4 holes before eventually losing 3&1.

Paul Fawcus and Alan Robinson were beaten 2 down, while Les Frizzell and I never really got going and went down 4&3.

There was also a closely fought match involving Geoff Whing and Geordie Pratt, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide.

On a positive note, we'd like to give a huge thank you to Miah’s Indian Restaurant for sponsoring our new team tops. The lads are already planning a couple of nights out there to show our appreciation! 😁

Our next match is in two weeks' time when we host Beamish in a home cup tie. Hopefully, we can bounce back and get back to winning ways.

The Seniors Championship was played today in pleasant conditions after initial fears of heavy rain.
Geoff Whing succeeded in winning his first championship trophy with a gross 83 narrowly beating Phil Old on a count back.
The best nett was won by BrianStone with a score of 69 beating David Robinson also on a count back. Congratulations to all players on some fine golf. Captain Phil Coldron presented the trophies.

A fantastic achievement by Wendy Robison, Julie Cornish and Claire Watson of Whickham Golf Club, who claimed victory with an impressive 87 points.

The trophy was presented by Christine Mair, DCLGA President, following a wonderful day of competition at Durham City Golf Club.
