Backworth Cricket Club

Backworth Cricket Club Backworth Cricket Club is a local club set in the grounds of Backworth Golf Club. Founded in 1874 and a great place to spend your summer!

We have four senior sides - two which play on a Saturday, a 3rd team which plays on a Sunday and a T20 team which plays on Thursday evenings. In addition to this we have a thriving junior section which fields teams at under 18, under 15, under 13 and Under 11 levels. Anyone is welcome at Backworth, players or non players! Come and enjoy the sun (or rain) with a drink from the Welfare and support the lads

🏏 Academy XI 2026 🏏

An incredible season from our young academy team in the Hetton Lyons Sunday League. With one game to spare, promotion to Division 3 was secured. Our team was mainly made up of players under the age of 18, with plenty of them getting their first taste of senior cricket. The team finished 3rd, winning 8 games and losing 4, with one dramatic tie away to Consett.

16-year-old Kai Pattison finished top of the batting chart with 306 runs at an average of 51, including 4 fifties. Joshua Blake was second with 275 runs at 55, including 2 fifties and an unbeaten, maiden hundred at home to Dawdon Welfare. Rowan Percival finished third with 220 runs at 27.5, scoring 2 fifties.

14-year-old Andrew Ross topped the bowling chart with 17 wickets at an average of 15 and a strike rate of 23. Rowan Percival finished second with 15 wickets at 9, with a strike rate of 20. 14-year-old Ethan Charlton was third with 13 wickets at 17 and a strike rate of 29.

2027 promises to be a hugely exciting season for our academy team in Division 3 of the HLSCL. The young players who have contributed to a great season will be looking to progress even further, as well as welcoming more juniors into senior cricket.

Special mention to skipper Andrew Charlton, who didn’t manage to capture a team photo at any point during the season - there’s always next year. Here are the lads having a quick game of football at Eppleton after the last game of the season.

🏏 2nd XI 2026 🏏

A tough return to Division 4 North for our second team, who finished in 11th place after winning 5 games. 1st XI injuries and availability lead to some long days in the field and some painful defeats which our young team will have learnt a lot from.

William Irwin finished highest run scorer with 441 runs at an average of 29, including 4 fifties. Adam Mooney was second with 399 runs at 22, scoring 2 fifties. George Metcalfe made up the top 3 with 255 runs at 21, scoring 2 fifties.

Dave Maccoy topped the wickets chart with 18 dismissals at 33, with a strike rate of 36. Despite only playing 5 games, Matthew Blake finished second with 14 wickets at an average of 7 and a strike rate of 19. 16-year-old Kai Pattison, who broke into the first team this year, finished third with 13 wickets at an average of 16 and a strike rate of 24.

Despite the tough season, there were plenty of positives to take with lots of contributions from players who have come through our junior system. Exposure to senior cricket will stand them in good stead for the seasons to come and we expect many more outstanding performances from them in 2027 and beyond.

🏏 1st XI 2026 🏏

An excellent return to Division 1 from the first team, finishing in the top half with an equal amount of wins and losses. After a rough patch in the middle of the season where injuries and unavailability lead to some heavy defeats and tough days, the 1s won 6 of their last 7 fixtures with the only defeat coming against the league winners.

Matthew Nice topped the runs chart with 469 runs at an average of 39, scoring 4 fifties in the process. John Duncan finished second with 465 runs at an average of 24, scoring 2 fifties and scoring the only first team hundred of the season. James Duncan was third with 425 runs at 25, scoring 3 fifties but still no Saturday six.

John Duncan finished top of the wickets with 34 at an average of 16 and a strike rate of 28. Chris Liddle finished in second place with 29 wickets at an average of 20 and strike rate of 27. Opening partner, Calum Bickerton completed the top three with 28 wickets at 18.5 and a strike rate of 35.

An incredible season despite plenty of setbacks, with lots of progress to take into 2027.
