We had two women’s teams in action on Wednesday night, and both games survived the forecast rain unscathed.

At Tynedale, against the league leaders, the 1st XI amassed an excellent 147-6, after being inserted. Ciara Boaden continued her excellent form with 81 from 57 balls and she was ably supported by Iona Lowry and Sarah Wood, with 50+ partnerships for both the first two wickets.

Tynedale have been scoring runs for fun this season so, whilst it was a good first innings total, the result was by no means certain. We knew we would have to bowl and field well. Removing two of the top three batters before the team score had passed 50 made the game more comfortable but Tynedale battled on and kept in touch until the very end, finishing 20 behind on 127-3.

This is an incredibly rewarding victory for Newcastle, showing how far we’ve come and, with so many players unavailable, the wonderful strength in depth we now possess in the squad.

Meanwhile, the softball team headed over to Tynemouth where they had a lot of fun, as usual, despite the very blustery conditions!

A fine Sunday afternoon at Jesmond saw the visit of South Northumberland Women’s 2s for a league match against Newcastle Women’s 2s.

South North were asked to bat first and we bowled and fielded really well to restrict them to a below par 123-6. Two batters made a good start but both were dismissed before they could really kick on. Eliza Peacock returned excellent figures of 2-5 from 3 overs.

The response from our batters was brutal. We raced to victory, 1 wicket down, with almost 6 overs to spare, with Maddie Holifield scoring her first Newcastle half century in only 35 balls.

Meanwhile, in Norfolk, our very own Ciara Boaden continued her good form, hitting a brisk 62 as she top scored for Northumberland Women in their last ball victory in the Metro Bank One Day Cup Women’s League. Well played, Ciara!

We’ve already had a few junior matches this week so we’ll do a little midweek roundup.

On Thursday evening, the U16 girls welcomed Tynemouth to Jesmond. Tynemouth, batting first, got off to a fast start before some tight bowling and fielding (including a spectacular catch) through the second half slowed the scoring rate significantly. The innings closed on 125, which was estimated to be about par.

Newcastle’s openers started a little slower but batted sensibly and soon accelerated. Nishka Bharti (53* from 37 balls) scored her first half century to set up what proved to be a relatively comfortable run chase. We hit the winning runs, one wicket down, with three overs to spare.

Meanwhile, the U11s headed south to take on Seaham Park in the NEPL cup semi final. We played hard but were up against a very strong side so we won’t be progressing to the final.

On Wednesday, we sent an U13s team to Backworth. It was a good close game, providing good experience for some of our younger players.

It was an almost perfect day for the Women’s 1st XI on Wednesday as they entertained Blagdon Park, at Jesmond.

Put in to bat, Newcastle’s openers wasted no time in getting to work to set a huge total. Ciara Boaden (92 from 48 balls) and Iona Lowry (87* from 74) put on 174 for the first wicket. The final score was 190-1 from 20 overs.

The second half of the match couldn’t have started any better as Blagdon’s dangerous opener played on to the first ball of the innings. After that, tight bowling and tight fielding never let Blagdon into the game. Wickets fell at regular intervals and were shared around between several bowlers. The visitors finished on 82-7, giving Newcastle an incredible 108 run margin of victory.
