What happens when two guitar makers get together? Plenty of talking, a close look at each other’s work, and a chance to swap guitars and play.

It was a real pleasure to welcome Louis Manteau Guitars, a guitar maker from France and former apprentice of Ervin Somogyi, to the Turnstone workshop recently. Louis brought along one of his newly finished instruments, and it was every bit as lovely to listen to as it was to look at.

So much of guitar making happens at our own benches. Getting together to share ideas, compare approaches and enjoy what someone else has created is a lovely part of this craft.

Tonewood like this doesn’t come along often.

When one of our most trusted suppliers offered us some beautiful antique Mahogany, we didn’t need to think twice. Wood of this age is increasingly hard to find, with a depth and stability that only time can give.

It has become the third release of our Select Series: five TMDs, each voiced by hand to bring out the best in its own set of tonewood, paired with Swiss Moon Spruce soundboards and Mahogany necks, with a 650mm (25.6”) scale length and a body join at the 14th fret.

Early listeners keep describing the same things: a stronger fundamental and real midrange weight, with no loss of bloom or sustain. Fingerstyle players in particular have called them quick, responsive and alive.

Five instruments. Once they find their homes, there will be no more.

Louis Campbell recently visited the Turnstone workshop to finalise the spec on his custom guitar. While he was here, he played our newly launched TMD in Cocobolo and Spruce and recorded a beautiful After Hours session on it. He loved it so much he changed his own spec to a TMD model on the spot.

Louis is one half of Spafford Campbell (nominated for Folk Album of the Year) and has accompanied Martin Simpson, Sam Sweeney, Sam Lee, and Ryan Young, among others. This session was recorded in the very room where his instrument is now being built.

We’re excited to give Louis his own Turnstone very soon!

There’s one mistake I see time and time again in caring for acoustic guitars, and it has nothing to do with knocks, scratches or drops. It’s humidity.

In this instalment of our After Hours Sessions, Ben Worsley plays a live acoustic guitar set among the workbenches and hand tools, on a Turnstone Select Series TMD in a challenging session, recorded during one of this summer’s heatwaves here in the UK.

Best known as touring guitarist for David Gilmour, Ben trades the stadium stage for a workshop bench, playing stripped-back and unhurried, with the summer heat pressing in through the open doors.

Special thanks to Ben for being a real trooper and performing in those temperatures!
