You don’t build confident kids by telling them to be confident.

You give them opportunities to prove to themselves that they can do hard things.

This form is simple.

But when you do simple things to perfection… it can be fantastic.

It can be amazing.

It can be the best.

That’s exactly how I see martial arts.

On Saturday I was coaching the final section of our form for this quarter.

And then I asked one of our white belts to step up.

He’s still right at the beginning of his journey.

But he stood at the front…

And led the entire group.

Every other child followed his lead.

And that moment?

That’s bigger than a martial arts form.

Because we’re not just teaching children what to do.

We’re teaching them to believe:

“I can do this.”

Then…

“I can show someone else.”

And eventually…

“I can lead.”

Confidence doesn’t appear overnight.

Leadership doesn’t magically switch on when they turn 18.

It’s built through hundreds of tiny moments where a child gets to step forward, take responsibility, make mistakes, try again and realise:

“Maybe I’m capable of more than I thought.”

That’s the real black belt.

The belt is just the bit you can see.

The person they become along the way is what matters!

Big kids class energy from these 2!

These young’ns have recently moved up from our 4–5 year old Tigers classes into our 6–8 year old Kids classes… and they’ve absolutely smashed it.

One of the best things about having age-specific classes is being able to give kids the right level of challenge for where they are.

In our Tiny Tigers, we’re building those foundations… confidence, listening, coordination and having loads of fun.

Then they move up into Kids, where we can start pushing them a little further, giving them more challenges and really getting into the martial arts!

And these two have jumped straight in 🙌

They’ve worked hard, got stuck in and shown just how much they’ve already developed.

Watching them grow into the next stage, take on new challenges and realise what they’re capable of… that’s the bit we love ❤️🥊

If all we teach kids is how to kick and punch, we’re missing the point.

Every week at Tempest, we deliberately stop the class to teach something that goes far beyond striking.

Integrity.
Confidence.
Discipline.
Respect.
Leadership.
Honesty.

This week, we talked about being honest… not just with other people, but with yourself.

Because there will never be anyone better at being you than you.

These aren’t random little talks we squeeze into a class.

These are the moments that shape how they think, how they act, and ultimately, who they become.

This is what real life skills look like on the mat.

We’re not just building better martial artists.

We’re building better humans.
