Something I like about where the fitness industry is heading right now.

We're starting to talk more about how we actually feel day to day. Energy levels, sleep quality, longevity, being able to keep up with your kids or grandkids, feeling strong and capable as you age. The conversation is shifting and I think it's a good thing.

For a long time fitness was dominated by images of half naked 20 year olds with great genetics who could get away with pretty much anything. That was the standard we were all supposed to aspire to. It put a lot of people off because it felt completely unreachable and honestly for most of us it was.

That's changing. More people are training because they want to feel better, not just look a certain way. More people are thinking about what their health looks like at 50, 60, 70 rather than just what they look like in a mirror right now. That shift matters because it makes fitness something that's actually for everyone, not just people who were already in shape.

There's still plenty wrong with this industry. But the positives are worth acknowledging when they show up.

If you've fallen out of routine over the summer or you've never really had one and you want to change how you feel on a daily basis, the best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is today. Link in bio to book a free taster session.

For most of human history, food had one job. Keep you alive long enough to find the next meal. That was it. You ate what you could get, when you could get it, and your body used almost all of it just to keep going.

The bit we forget is that indulgence used to be rare. A feast at harvest. A cake once a year on your birthday. Christmas dinner, a wedding, a wake. These were occasions, not routines, and your body only had to deal with that kind of eating a handful of times a year.

Now every day can look like a festival if you let it. A pastry with your coffee on the way to work, a takeaway because it's been a long day, a family bag of crisps that somehow never makes it to an actual family occasion, a dessert because it's Friday and Fridays deserve it. None of these are a problem on their own, the same way one slice of Christmas cake was never a problem. The problem is doing the "special occasion" version of eating 7 days a week and then wondering why your body responds like it's constantly at a party.

I'm not saying never enjoy your food, or that you need to eat like you're stuck on a desert island. Just worth noticing how many of your days actually have an "occasion" attached to them, whether it's stress, boredom, or just because it's there. Most people are surprised by the number when they actually count it.

If you want a hand figuring out what a normal, non-festival day of eating looks like for you, that's something we help with alongside training.

You have autonomy over your own choices, and the outcomes you get.

The truth is, you can always say “I’ll start tomorrow,” “next Monday,” “next month,” “from New Year.” But we all know how it goes. The date just gets pushed back further. There’s always something that pops up, something you don’t feel in control of, and life gets in the way.

The truth is you have autonomy over your choices. The choices you make today lead to the outcomes you’ll have tomorrow. Not literally, but over the long run.

If you choose to make coffee at home instead of buying one from Costa, you save yourself £3. Meaningless in the short term. But do that 20 times a month and it’s £60. That daily choice matters.

Same with eating an apple instead of a Snickers. In the moment you’re only saving a few calories. But over a month or two, that can add up to a kilogram of bodyweight, depending how often you’d normally be having that Snickers.

One gym session might seem meaningless. Even one month might feel meaningless if you’re chasing something big. But keep doing it long enough and there are real benefits. You’ll find something that clicks for you.

Now imagine stacking a few of these habits together. Doesn’t sound that hard, but it adds up to real change.

If you’re someone who feels stuck and needs a hand kickstarting your health and fitness, we’re one message away.

Before I opened the studio I was planning to go down the online coaching route. It's easier to scale, lower overheads, you can work from anywhere. On paper it made more sense.

But the more I thought about it the more I realised I don't want to see people through a screen. Not on Zoom calls, not through messages back and forth about how a session went. I actually want to be in the room with the people I'm working with.

We already spend too much of our lives looking at each other through a lens. Work calls, group chats, scrolling through people's highlights. It's all connection without really connecting. I didn't want to add to that.

There's something about showing up to a place, doing something hard with other people and having a real conversation between sets that you just can't replicate online. That's what got me into coaching in the first place. Not programming sets and reps from behind a laptop.

There were other reasons too, some of them more selfish if I'm being honest. But the main one was simple. I wanted to meet the people I work with, train them face to face and actually be part of what they're doing. That's it really.

I’m currently training 3 women with osteoporosis or osteopenia.

It’s more common than I expected and the thing that stands out most is how the diagnosis makes people feel.

You’re not in pain, nothing has changed overnight, but suddenly you feel like you’re fragile. Like your body can’t be trusted anymore.

Strength training won’t reverse the diagnosis but it can stop things getting worse, build the muscle that protects your bones, and improve the balance that prevents falls in the first place.

If you’ve been diagnosed and you’re unsure where to start, that’s exactly what a taster session is for.

Some things in life feel hard to start but you always feel better afterwards.

Think about cleaning your house. You put it off all week. You really don't want to do it. Then you finally get going and an hour later you're sitting in a spotless room wondering why you made such a big deal out of it.

It's the same with cooking a proper meal. You could just order something. It would be easier. But when you actually cook, eat well and don't feel like rubbish afterwards, you're always glad you did it.

Sorting out your finances. Nobody wakes up excited to go through their bank statements. But once you've done it and you know where you stand, that weight off your shoulders is worth every minute you spent avoiding it.

Having a difficult conversation you've been putting off. Terrifying before you do it. Almost always a relief once it's done.

Exercise is exactly the same. Almost nobody feels like training before they start. You're tired, you're busy, the sofa is right there. But nobody ever finishes a session and thinks I wish I hadn't done that. Every single time you feel better afterwards. More energy, better mood, clearer head.

The pattern is always the same. The resistance is before you start, never after. The hardest part is getting through the door. Once you're in, you're fine. You already know this because it's true for everything else in your life.

If you've been putting off getting started with your fitness, you already know how you'll feel once you do. Link in bio to book a free taster session.

Through one of my clients I had the chance to meet Pawel. Him and my client Gaby have started a community interest company called Rebalance Wellbeing Hub with one simple idea. Help people get healthier through a more complete approach to health.

That’s something I care about. I run a strength training studio but I’ve always believed that getting people healthier goes beyond what happens in a session. Sleep, recovery, stress, energy. It all connects. And the reality is we need more people and more businesses pulling in the same direction if we’re going to make any real difference to how healthy this country is.

Rebalance are running free monthly workshops in Oxford to help people understand their health and their bodies better. That alone is worth paying attention to. There aren’t many companies giving up their time to educate people for free.

They also offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which is essentially resting in a pressurised oxygen rich chamber for about an hour. People come out noticing better energy, deeper sleep and clearer thinking. It’s not a magic fix but it supports everything else you’re already doing for your health.

Worth a look if you’ve been feeling more run down than usual. Link to book in Rebalance bio
