It’s hard to believe that it was 4 years ago that the incredible Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson and Iain Percy received their silver medal at London 2012.

As we prepare to cheer on sailors from across the world in this year’s Olympic Games in Rio, we can’t help but think that by the time the Games finish it will be only a month, if not less until the weekend will be upon us.

NOW is the time to help us continue Bart’s legacy. Sign up to Bart’s Bash at www.bartsbash.com and make this the event where you help inspire more people into this amazing sport and help support an amazing cause. Don’t forget Bart’s Bash is being held on the last weekend of the Paralympic Games and is raising funds for disabled sailing globally.

Every Club that signs up before the end of the month will receive a FREE fundraising pack including: charity boxes, SailonBart magazines, flags and more.

Sailing Resumes at the Island Sailing Club Reading

The annual ‘Brass Monkey’ trophy eventually took place on the warm afternoon of Sunday the 4th April. This race is usually run on New Years Day when intrepid sailors’ brave icy conditions for their sport, but like so much had to be delayed due to covid19 restrictions.

Getting off to a flying start, Peter C in his Laser rounded the first mark ahead of the chasing fleet. By the mid point of the race it was all still to sail for, with Maggie P in her Graduate, Ian W in his Solo and last years winner John B in his Graduate all making strong challenges for the lead. However, taking full advantage of a couple of wind shifts, Peter C managed to open up a big enough gap to claim the race and the much coveted trophy.

Although one of the smallest trophies raced for at the Island Sailing Club Reading, the ‘Brass Monkey’ is always hotly contested and never more so than this year in the warm April sunshine, when we were all just happy to be allowed to sail again!

It was good to see so many lining up for the start of the inaugural Geoff Planner Pursuit Race during Commodores day yesterday.

Geoff was one of our founding members and will be fondly remembered for all he did for everyone in the club over the many years he was involved. This race is a great way to celebrate his memory.

Thank you to Ann and Claire for sharing such an amazing man with us. It was great to have you with us yesterday ❤️

While we love to see all the boats on our water, we understand that safety comes first and sometimes we, sadly, need to retire our beloved boats. On one of these occasions we were pleased to see 2 of our boats given new lease on life by the guys at Daymark Rum who up-cycled two of our boats that had made it to the 'graveyard'.

We are sure that they will help keep the souls of the sailors who cross their course warm for years to come...

Unfortunately, as a result of COVID-19, we have suspended all sailing (as has been the case for the last couple of weeks) and events for the foreseeable future. This includes our open day and scheduled training courses.

As soon as it is safe to do so, we will be back on the water! We look forward to seeing you then ☺️

Stay safe everyone!

We are looking forward to hosting our open day next month!

First race of the year sailed in light winds with 10 boats taking part (after a little bit of squeezing into wetsuits after the Christmas feasts)

Well done to the following sailors taking the top spots for what is arguably the cutest trophy we have:
3rd: Mel W
2nd: James S
1st: John B

Well done to everyone competing the Level 1, 2 or Stage 2 courses this weekend! You were all amazing students 🏆

Looking forward to seeing you on the water continuing to learn the art of adjusting your sails (perhaps you can teach some of us along the way) ⛵

A couple of pictures from Commodores Day 2019. Great fun was had by all as we showed the breadth of ours skills and interests, having our faces done like Ziggy Stardust, sailed a persuit race, took part in rowing race in a variety of boats, ate great food and not only built rockets but also saw how high these could be shot into the air using household products.

Thanks Dave for all your hard work over the last 6 months and we look forward to what the next 6 months will bring us!!!

Sunday saw some boats racing and some just sailing around. It was a bit windy at times, with the strongest gust on the weather station measuring 16.5 mph. Congratulations to Ian F and Graham for winning a race each.

Thank you to the maintenance team, who had a good day servicing the GP14 s.

Thanks to Eleanor for the teas and coffees and for whoever made the banana and lemon drizzle cakes.

A good day was had by all.

Yesterday saw members taking part in the Longest Day Race. This is race is all about teamwork and perseverance.

Well done to the winners of the Longest Day Race held yesterday! The Digital Trophy was presented by the commodore, Dave to the winning team consisting of John, Bill and Roland (Left to right).

This team completed 17 laps on a GP14 in the allotted time and was the only boat not to capsize on the day.

Well done to everyone who took part!

Don't forget the Berrys Lane, outside the club, will be closed between 09:30 and 12:30 on Sunday.

Don't let it keep you from joining the races in the Goring Invitational at 2!

Some pics from our first Wednesday evening sail! Great evening all around 🙂

14/05/2019

This week sees in the first week of Wednesday night sailing for the year and what a week it is! There is expected to be a reasonable wind (approximately 7 knots) so should be good for brushing off any cobwebs that some of the boats have been collecting over the winter. The evening is due to start at 6pm and ends in time for us to be off the water and de-rig before darkness sets in.

For all our newer members, this is an opportunity to practice those skills or perhaps have a fun race with some of the other members. Some even come down just to tinker with their boats before the weekends racing. Whatever your intention is, it is great to get away from the stresses of the week.

Hopefully we will see you all on the water tomorrow! ⛵
