Today is the winter solstice. The shortest day of the year. A time of maximum yin energy yet it's surprisingly warm.
It's a good time to celebrate the stillness of winter with meditation or contemplation.
From now on the days will get longer by about 15 minutes a week. Nature starts to come back to life, renewal, regrowth and a gradual expansion into summer.

Tai chi and kung fu teach you to adapt fluidly to change. Many people resist change and they suffer because of it. They are too tight in their body which leads to rigidity in their thinking.
We learn instead to become softer and more malleable. To recognise that change is happening all the time.
Nothing ever stays the same nor should it. It is those who can adapt to change who thrive the most. Those who don't can never be happy. They will become more and more tense as they resist change.
Soften your breath and your body and embrace change whenever you can.

When talking to someone in person or online are you benefitting them or belittling them?
So many suffer with negative self-talk so pointing out their good points can be very powerful. It's even more powerful if you do it to yourself. You may be amazed at how others respond when you treat them nicely.
We all have our strengths and weaknesses and we are all valuable, worthwhile people.
Value yourself. Value others.

Strange but true.
All of the seven countries in the world that eat the most saturated fat have got less heart disease than all of the seven countries in the world that eat the most.
Think about that.
Saturated fat is actually good for you. It doesn't clog your arteries and certainly doesn't make you fat. You need it. You have evolved to eat it. All low fat products are a con. They replace healthy fat with unhealthy sugars and chemicals that your body doesn't recognise as food. Stop eating them. Stick to full fat and be healthier, happier and slimmer.

When walking keep upright, relax down through your body and move from your hips not your head.
You'll be more balanced and relaxed. You'll feel and look more confident and more powerful and you'll be more aware of yourself and your environment.

Mindless Exercise
A lot of exercise these days is mindless. People watch TV in the gym and listen to headphones while running. Mindless exercise has some benefits but you're missing out on so much. Even changing which part of your body you're focusing on can make a huge difference to the way you do an exercise.
Switch off the TV, take out the headphones and learn to be more mindful and aware of how you are moving your body. Be aware of your balance, where you may be holding too much tension, try different ways to do the same exercise to see which is the most efficient.
When I see others exercising I constantly see people holding their body in unbalanced ways and putting stresses on themselves they don't need. These stresses cause injuries, waste energy and make the movement ineffective.
In kung fu and tai chi we learn to be mindful of exactly how each movement is done. You are never off balance, forces are spread throughout your body and rooted into the earth. Training injuries are almost unheard of.
Be more mindful when exercising and reap the full benefits of everything you do.

Move with relaxed power
The strongest muscles in your body are in your centre. So it makes sense when moving to use your strongest muscles first as animals do instead of the weakest ones first as we humans so often do.
Follow the principles of tai chi. When walking move your legs from the hips. You'll be more balanced and controlled. This is how your legs have evolved to be used.
When generating any kind of force with your arms don't move from your hands but your shoulders first then elbows. This is far more powerful yet takes less effort. Try it and see.
Moving like this means you can keep your hands and feet soft and relaxed. Your shoulders and hips will open up and lose a lot of their tension. Your weight will be more centred and with that physical balance will come greater emotional balance. It will help take the strain off your heart and give you so much more confidence, poise and greater health.

Is your mind cluttered?
When your head is full of clutter it’s like living in a house with boxes everywhere covering all the walls and windows. Every new thing that happens in your life adds new boxes and mess. You see them everywhere you look and cannot escape them.
There is a way out. There is a path to freedom. A way to declutter your mind, bring you back some perspective and restore sanity to your life.
Meditation is the art of decluttering the mind. Spend a few minutes every day to create some space in your head to live in, to breathe, to take a step back and see what is really important.
Meditation brings clarity, balance and ultimately mental and physical health.
It doesn't have to involve sitting in the lotus position humming or chanting mantras. It can simply be taking a few minutes to sit down, close your eyes and focus completely on your breath.
Just observe your thoughts without being tied up in them. Watch them come and go then come back again. It may not feel like meditating at first but you will still emerge refreshed and reenergised. Keep at it and the feeling will become deeper and enable you to reap the benefits more powerfully and for longer.

As we age we develop lots of tension around the chest and abdomen. This interferes with both breathing and digestion so it affects every part of your health and wellbeing.
The breathing and movement exercises of tai chi open up and mobilise these tight areas. You feel more expressive, you have more energy and there's less stress on your heart.
It's win/win.
