Here's an answer to a question I was asked on Quora.

Is it hard to kick someone in the head?

Yes. It takes years of practice in flexibility training, strength and speed to be able to kick someone in the head and 99% of the time it’s not worth it.
To do so leaves you exposed on one leg, unable to react to other things going on around you, vulnerable to having your balance taken away, exposing your groin and other vital areas in your legs and hoping that your foot arrives at its target before your opponent moves.
Kickers say that kicks are good because legs are stronger than arms therefore kicks are stronger than punches.
FALSE
Kicks are only stronger than punches if you only punch with your arm muscles. A good punch should involve the entire body. Your legs push into the ground, you rotate your hips and waist and the power flows up and through your shoulders and finally into your hands which now have the full weight and power of your whole body behind them.
Don’t waste your time and energy on high kicks which are virtually useless outside the ring. Focus instead on keeping your legs on the ground where they should be and developing powerful strikes.

In tai chi we learn not to resist. We learn to keep our body soft, our mind calm and our breathing even and smooth. The less you resist life the softer you can become.

The softer you are the more you can feel. The more you can feel the more rich life becomes. You learn not to tighten up at the slightest provocation but keep your heart, mind and body open and to connect truly with yourself and the people and nature around you.

Happiness doesn't come from material possessions but from opening yourself up to the energies around you and truly appreciating every moment for what it is. Tai chi gives us the space and the tools to do that.

I often think teaching tai chi is like teaching someone how to sing.
The form of tai chi is like the song the singing student wants to sing.
But you don't teach someone to sing just by making them sing a song over and over again.
First you have to teach them the fundamentals. How to stand, how to use their breathing to power their voice, how to open up resonating spaces in their body, how to pitch a note, musicality and so on.
Unfortunately too many tai chi classes think they can teach tai chi just by going over a form.
No they can't. The form is the end product. It is there to develop skills that have been learned individually. It is an aide memoire to help remember principles and techniques.
First you have to learn how to stand and root your body, how to move in a connected way, how to develop and coordinate your breathing, how to open your joints and encourage a flow of energy and so on.
Knowing a form is one thing but it does not mean you know tai chi. It's the difference between a karaoke singer and an opera singer.
To know tai chi practice those fundamentals of stance, movement and breathing. Don't worry if you don't remember the form sequence as that will come in time. It's not as important as the fundamentals.

Our tiger training trains you to generate a wave of awesome power from your feet to your hands. It opens your joints - particularly knees, hips, spine and shoulders. It teaches you to move with the same fluid power most 4 legged animals do.
We are not weaker than animals we just aren't used to generating waves of power like they do.
This kind of training is hard to find now. Yet it enables smaller individuals to throw around larger people with ease. Plus it maintains joint health for life.

Wrist locks are one of the most useful skills in self defence. Fast, effective and no blood, broken bones or court cases afterwards.
They do take some practice to be able to apply the force in a focused way though.
Control your opponent to control the situation.

All the students and the teacher are very friendly and help they all help each other to progress. There are no cliques. There are no big egos and nobody is made to feel inadequate in any way.

From the very first class, you will be amazed at the huge amount of useful and amazing knowledge, techniques and skills you will learn.
