Dear new mum,

Can I ask you something? When you're exhausted, do you sleep and wake up restored? Or do you sleep and wake up just as empty as when you went to bed?
If it's the second one, you're not tired. You're depleted. And they're not the same thing. Tired is fixed by rest. Depleted runs deeper, it lives in your hormones, your nervous system and your adrenal function.
During perimenopause, oestrogen and progesterone decline. Cortisol rises more easily and takes longer to come down. Your body gets stuck in a low level stress state. Wired. But exhausted. Unable to recover no matter how much you sleep.
Most women respond by pushing harder. More exercise. Less food. More effort. All of which adds more cortisol to an already overloaded system.
