π· Struggling to pay your PAYE to HMRC?
Youβre definitely not alone. One of the most common questions I get from business owners is how to make sure PAYE payments are made correctly and allocated to the right place.
My preferred method is paying through your HMRC Business Tax Account (Government Gateway).
β
First, set up a Business Gateway account if you havenβt already.
β
Add PAYE as a tax on your account.
β
HMRC will then send you an activation code through the post to verify itβs really you.
β
Once youβve entered the code, youβre good to go and can make payments directly through the portal.
Why do I like this method?
Because youβre paying exactly what HMRC says you owe, and the payment is automatically allocated against the correct tax month. Much less room for errors!
If you choose to pay by bank transfer instead, please make sure you use the correct payment reference. This should be your PAYE reference followed by the relevant tax year and tax month.
Iβve seen all sorts happen when references are entered incorrectly:
β Payments allocated to the wrong tax account (for example, Self Assessment instead of PAYE)
β Payments allocated to the wrong tax month
β Interest charges and payment chasers when youβve actually paid the money
And letβs be honestβ¦ nobody needs that extra hassle.
The final option is setting up a Direct Debit.
π The benefit? Youβll never miss a payment.
π€ The downside? You need to be comfortable with HMRC taking the correct amount from your account each month.
Personally, I know some business owners who love Direct Debit and others who prefer to stay in control and make the payment themselves.
Which camp are you in? Team Direct Debit or Team βIβd rather press the button myselfβ? π

The Small Business Protections Bill, mentioned in the Kingβs Speech, aims to ease payment challenges for smaller businesses. It includes a 60-day cap on payment terms, mandatory late payment interest, and new powers for the Small Business Commissioner. Smaller firms are eager to follow its progress.
