What’s actually inside a modern goalie pad?

Not exactly deer hair and leather anymore 😅

Now it’s layers of carbon fibre, different foam densities everywhere, plastics/composites, synthetic leathers, printed graphics instead of only stitched panels… whole mix of materials depending on the zone of the pad.

Some areas built super rigid for rebounds. Other spots softer for dampening/control. Then trying to keep the whole thing lightweight but still durable enough to survive beer league hacks and pro-level abuse alike.

Kinda wild how much engineering goes into these now compared to even 10-15 years ago.

As the WNIHL season ended today and after a lot of thought, I’ve decided to step back from coaching across two clubs and three teams.

It’s not been an easy decision, but one I know is the right one for me and my family.

Being involved with the U16 girls team from day one has been something I’m genuinely proud of. This season especially showed how far the players have come - their confidence, determination, understanding of the game, skills, and belief in themselves. Watching the friendships grow through hockey has been just as rewarding as seeing the progress on the ice.

The jump from 1 point in the standings last season to finishing 4th this year with a .500 record (7W, 2D, 7L) says a lot about the work the players have put in. The team is in a really good place heading into next season.

The hard part is feeling that this past season I haven’t been able to give the team the time and attention I believe they deserve. Add in 56 games across the season, and a son who’s now at the age where weekends are filling up with his own activities, and it’s time to make family the priority again.

A huge thank you to Leeds Junior Knights for giving me the chance to be part of the first three years of the girls programme, and to Martin - I’ve been lucky to coach alongside you.

To my now former players: I’ll be cheering you on from a distance and will keep believing in you all. No doubt some of our paths will cross again in senior hockey - whether as club mates or opponents.

Be the best teammate you can be. Keep learning. Stay coachable.
