BUILDING A DYNASTY, LEAVING A LEGACY
It's pretty clear that this Warrington Rugby Union team are in new territory. After winning the first ever silverware in the club's 103 year history and again in consecutive seasons, they are now in the Lancashire Cup Final (another first for the club) in the highest division our club has ever competed.

Building a dynasty
I think the difference is that this team have predominantly come through the club's excellent junior pathway in Warrington Rugby Union Juniors. We have lots of brilliant kids, indeed 7 former juniors (that we know of) are currently playing professional rugby, 6 in Rugby League and Roma in Union (Go Warriors!) as well as lots of Academy players in both codes. But if the 1st team aren't playing in a quality, competitive division, young players understandably want to look elsewhere to further themselves. A lot of this team have decided to stay on and play senior rugby at their club. They've been promoted twice in 2 years so the competitive division they seek is coming to them rather than them having to leave to find it.

Leaving a legacy
We have just been promoted into a brilliant division and with Northwhich, Winnington, Widnes, Manchester etc. we're not short of any local rivalries. We're looking to attack this division, to be competitive and keep moving forward; building on the last 2 years of development. The team needs to continue to improve to be a place where more of our juniors want to play - for it be their ambition to represent Warrington. If we can get there in a town like ours, where rugby is in the blood? The possibilities are extreme.

So, onto our 1st league game for the 1st team in this brand new dawn. The mighty Manchester came to Grappenhall Sports Club on Saturday and we found out a bit more about how big this next step really is. Whilst we fell short 34 - 36, our last second drop goal drifted agonisingly wide denying us a victory. We nevertheless saw that Warrington can still score some fantastic tries. The speed and skillsets the lads have been working on is continuing to improve. There are a few areas the team need to address quickly but if this game is anything to go by, we're in for one hell of a season.
