The return from a first loss tells you a lot more than many victories along the journey sometimes.

Fair play to Jake Dodd on Saturday, he gave it everything in Belfast. 🇮🇪🩸

What seemed like a few points ahead going into the final round for our Commonwealth Games medalist, one shot is all it takes & that’s the nature of our sport.

Alfie Clegg is looking to bounce back after an entertaining British title challenge in February. 🇬🇧🏆

Both looking to get back to winning ways and what a catapult back into British title contention it would be for the winner. 💫

It feels like one of those fights that makes sense next for me.

In June 1926, Welsh and European amateur bantamweight champion Archie Rule boarded a ship bound for New York.

The trip was recorded.

The newspapers reported it.

Photographs were taken.

Yet one question remains…

Today is 🤝

I wanted to go down a different route with this one today.

The sport of boxing is such a funny one. From grassroots to the world champions, your teammates are not just a community sometimes, it can be like a second family.

But is there really room for “best friends”? Especially at the pinnacle of the sport?

It’s a funny one boxing, as a boxer is given absolutely everything by a good coach & a good teams yet walks a very lonely road at the same time, as the steps have to be put in by the boxer to fulfill his true potential.

What is everyone’s opinion of this?

a decade ago we lost our sports greatest icon. 🙏⭐️

Muhammad Ali was more than a heavyweight champion. More than speed, charisma & his signature press-conference poetry. 🎼

A man of countless comical moments, but we have to commend his bottle for standing against a war he didn’t believe in where millions of U.S citizens outcasted him. Being willing to sacrifice his freedom, the greatest years of his boxing career & more to the point, his life. Considering Malcolm X & MLK lost their lives all in the midst of this arduous couple of years.

Yet after all this, he still cemented an incredible career. From his controversial historic demolition jobs of the destructive Sonny Liston, to the wars with Frazier & the impossible night in Zaire… 🇺🇸🇵🇭🇨🇩

Ali gave moments that became part of world history for eternity. 📖💫

A decade later… his face, quotes & moments still looms over boxing & world culture as a whole. He will never be forgotten.

This tribute is a small recognition to “The Greatest.” 🥊

10 years ago, one of boxing’s most riveting performers of the early 21st century stepped away from the sport.

“Sugar” Shane Mosley was violence wrapped in elegance.

Blistering speed.
Fight-changing power.
A willingness to face anyone across generations of elite competition.

From lightweight destruction… to unforgettable nights with De La Hoya, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Cotto and Wright. Mosley contributed to a very high calibre era of 140-147lb boxing greatness.

Even late into his career, the danger never truly left him.

Today marks 5 years as a professional for Mexico’s Gabriela Fundora. already a unified world champion, Ring Magazine 2024 Female Fighter of the Year & currently regarded by many as the finest female flyweight on the planet. 🌎 🇲🇽🏆

From a Welsh perspective we want to commemorate the early success of this great ambassador to female boxing. But we wanted to link in a boxing history discussion…

Is Fundora on the right trajectory to build a case as the greatest female flyweight of all time at just 24 years old? Could you see her being placed alongside the man many still call the greatest male flyweight ever? (103 years since he stepped into the ring btw!)

The Merthyr legend terrorised boxing’s smallest division over a century ago with frightening power, unmatched aggression & one of the most devastating knockout records the sport has ever seen. 💥

One year on from this lively four rounder at the LC2 in Swansea. ⚡️

21 year-old unbeaten Colombian-born prospect fighting out of the Welsh valleys town of Pontyclun met Llanelli’s former Welsh Super-Lightweight champion who recently began the pursuit of a UK road warrior due to his passion still burning for competition.

JD Cuervo vs Angelo Dragone may have been an early preliminary bout on a small hall show. Yet the echoes of the shots being traded and the energy from the crowd for this one is what makes night like this special.

And what a fire-fight this one was from start to finish. 🔥

A year later, it still deserves its flowers. 👏🥊

Three Moments. Three Legacies. 📚

From South Wales to the wider world, The Basement Bounce Off pays tribute to three important anniversaries to celebrate today. One close to our heart & two across the pond. Each carrying a different message at different chapters. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🌍✍️

April 30th 1976, on our side of the waters under the lights of Wembley Arena, a somewhat expectation was sparked, Gorseinon’s Colin Jones stepped in with Doncaster’s Paul Kelly in the British ABA 67kg final. There was no fanfare, just a young Welshman with a stubborn streak that didn’t know how to take a backward step. Nights like that don’t just crown champions. 🏆

They reveal them.

A few hours later, far from our shores in Maryland, USA at the Capitol Center, Muhammad Ali shared twelve hard rounds with Philly’s Jimmy Young. It wasn’t one of the famous victories, Young was no world be**er & was a relatively smaller heavyweight. But it mattered all the same. Because even the greatest, on certain nights, are asked questions they can’t quite answer. There’s a dignity in that which only this sport understands. 🕰️

Then 40 years later on the same night, without the noise or the headlines, a young Jaron Ennis took his first professional steps. No questions of legacy, expectation… just the quiet beginning of something that would grow steadily in time. Boxing has a way of hiding its futures in plain sight. 🌱🥊
