Wanderers F.C., one of the best known Rugby Union Clubs in the world, is Ireland's second oldest Rugby Club having been founded in 1870 by some former members of Dublin University F C., who up to that time had to seek opponents outside of Ireland, as there was no other Irish club at that time. Wanderers F.C. was one of the founding clubs of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), hence the title Wanderers F.C. and not R.F.C., as all clubs were football clubs prior to the founding of the IRFU. The club, now in its 142nd season, is proud of its contribution to Rugby Football, having provided 87 Irish International players, 5 captains of Ireland and one captain each of England and Australia in addition to one captain of the Lions.

A huge congratulations to Wanderers player Jordan Conroy who had the honour of pulling on the famous black and white jersey of the Barbarians at the London City 7s. Held on Thursday, 17 September at the historic Honourable Artillery Company grounds, the tournament saw Sh**un Rugby winning the competition after beating the Barbarians in the semi-final.

Everyone at Wanderers is delighted to see Jordan representing the club on such a prestigious stage.

*Wanderers’ Barbarians tradition continues with Jordan Conroy*

Wanderers is delighted to recognise the selection of senior team player Jordan Conroy in the Barbarians 7s squad for the upcoming London City 7s tournament, taking place on Thursday 17 September.

Conroy’s selection adds a modern chapter to a proud Wanderers tradition of players wearing the famous black-and-white of the Barbarians while representing the club. Among those to have achieved the distinction are some of the most recognisable names in Wanderers playing history, including Ronnie Dawson, Andy Mulligan, Kevin Flynn, Gerry Culliton and Phillip Matthews.

The Wanderers connection with the Barbarians has also extended beyond the playing field. Ronnie Dawson served on the Barbarian Committee (1967 to 1988) and later became a Vice-President of the Barbarians. Kevin Flynn likewise continued his association with the club after his playing career, serving on the Barbarian Committee (1985 to 1998).

A former Ireland 7s international and Olympian renowned for his extraordinary pace and finishing ability, Conroy has established himself as one of the outstanding sevens players of his generation. His selection for the Barbarians 7s squad is fitting recognition of his achievements and provides another link between Wanderers and one of rugby’s most celebrated invitational teams.
