What's in your head over the ball?

For most club golfers it's the slice. Or the water. Or the fourball watching from the first tee.

Jack Nicklaus did the opposite. He said he never hit a shot, even in practice, without a sharp, in-focus picture of it first: where it finishes, then the flight, then the swing.

You can borrow that this weekend. Stand behind the ball. See where it lands. See the flight. Step in, breathe out slowly, swing. One picture, then go.

If you want it to hold under pressure, the free 7-Day Athlete's Edge Reset is in the first comment.

A few seconds behind the ball can change the whole shot. Before you step in, take a moment to slow everything down. See where it finishes. See the flight. Watch the ball travel the whole way to the target. Then go. Jack Nicklaus did it on every shot, even in practice, because he knew the picture in his mind comes before the swing. Hypnosis was named after sleep. The man who named it spent years trying to take the name back.

In 1843 a Scottish surgeon, James Braid, called it hypnotism, from the Greek word for sleep. Within a few years he saw his mistake. The people he worked with weren't asleep. They were wide awake and completely focused on one idea.

In 1848 he tried to rename it monoideism. One idea, held in the mind. Nobody listened. The name stuck, and so did the myth.

Think about the moments that decide your sport. The free over the bar. Mile 20. The short putt. You don't need sleep there. You need one idea, held in the mind, while everything else goes quiet.

That's what sports hypnosis trains.

The man who named hypnosis tried to take the name back.

1843: James Braid calls it hypnotism, after the Greek word for sleep. 1848: he sees they're not asleep at all. Awake, aware, locked onto one thing. He tries to rename it monoideism. One idea, held in the mind. Too late.

The free-taker over the ball. The runner at mile 20. The golfer over a four-foot putt. That's the skill sports hypnosis trains. Not sleep. Focus.

"The mind is the limit." Arnold Schwarzenegger

He finished the thought: as long as the mind can envision it, and you really believe 100 percent, you can do it.

100 percent is a high bar. Most of us live at about 70. We believe it on a good day, in training, when nobody's watching.

Then the big moment comes and the other 30 percent speaks up.

Sound familiar?

That 30 percent often started with one comment. A coach saying "you're bad at this". It took a second to put in, and it's been talking ever since.

Here's the good news. If a belief can be created by accident in a second, a better one can be created on purpose. Question the old one. Choose the new one. Repeat it until your mind expects it.

I've written up the full breakdown, with a 3-rep belief drill you can start tonight: https://blog.endaoshea.com/post/mind-is-the-limit?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mindlimit_1023

Your body is ready. Is your mind?

You train hard. You put in the hours. But on the big day, your head doesn't always show up with you.

Sound familiar?

That's what self-hypnosis is for. You put your headphones on, close your eyes, and a guided track takes you into a calm, focused state. There, you rehearse your best performance until it feels familiar. So when the pressure's on, it isn't new.

Make sense?

My free 7-Day Athlete's Edge Reset gets you started: two guided self-hypnosis tracks, the Playbook and the Edge Toolkit. About 20 minutes a day for 7 days.

You've tried everything on your own, and it still shows up on the day.

The breathing apps. The visualisation. The positive self-talk. Good tools. Wrong layer. They work on your thinking, and the freeze sits underneath it.

That's the layer the Pressure-Proof Performance System works on.

Four private sessions over 30 days, fully online. A competition-day script built for you. Direct access to me for the full 30 days. The 7-Day Reset and the 30-Day Program included.

It's application only. I take ten athletes a month, because each one gets my full attention.

Session one comes with the First-Session Fit Guarantee. Complete Session 1. If it isn't the biggest internal shift of your performance career, you only pay for that one session — we refund the rest, no questions — and you keep the 30-Day Athlete's Edge Peak Performance Program free.

If you've already proved you can do it in training, isn't it time the pressure stopped deciding the result?

You can't force the zone. You can invite it.

The zone is a focused state you already know. The crowd fades, time goes strange, and your body just plays.

It's close to what happens in hypnosis. Attention narrows, and the thinking gets out of the way. That's not a coincidence. It's the same doorway.

Three ways to invite it before a game:

1. Run the same routine for a friendly and a final.
2. Narrow your focus to one thing you can see or feel.
3. Use one cue word you've linked to your best games.

Do it every time, and your body learns the way in.

When did you last find the zone?

Lying awake replaying the miss? That's not reflection. It's practice.

Every time you replay a bad game in your head, your body runs it again. It doesn't know it's only a memory.

Try the rewind instead:

1. Watch it once, from the stands, like a highlight on TV.
2. Rewind to the moment just before it went wrong.
3. Play it again the way you wanted, through your own eyes, at full speed.

Three times. Then stop.

Parents, this works brilliantly with kids who can't let a match go.
