Many can find research papers, summarize their findings, and organize references, but connecting those findings into a meaningful academic argument is where the real challenge begins.

Critical synthesis goes beyond summarizing individual research papers. It brings findings from multiple studies together, compares results, evaluates the strength of evidence, and develops a coherent understanding of the research topic.

2๏ธโฃ Group studies into themes: Identify recurring concepts, mechanisms, populations, or outcomes rather than organizing the review paper-by-paper.
3๏ธโฃ Compare findings: Look for agreements, contradictions, and differences in research methods, study populations, and settings.
4๏ธโฃ Assess the strength of evidence: Consider study design, sample size, methodological quality, limitations, and potential sources of bias.
5๏ธโฃ Integrate and interpret: Connect findings across studies and explain what the collective evidence suggests.
