POSTURE SERIES Β· PART 1 OF 3 π₯οΈ
Shoulders that look "slumped" aren't just sitting badly.
Specific muscles are overworking while others switch off β and here's the actual pattern underneath it. π€
One muscle carries most of the load.
The muscle running from the base of your skull to your shoulder stays switched on for hours to hold your head up while looking at a screen.
It shortens and tightens from constant use. This is usually the muscle people feel as tight shoulders or neck tension. And it's overworking to compensate for muscles that aren't doing their job.
Tightness here is often a symptom of imbalance elsewhere, not the root cause.
While that one muscle overworks, two key areas go quiet.
Between your shoulder blades, and wrapping around your ribs, are muscles that normally hold your shoulder blades flat and pulled back. When they're underused, they weaken β and the shoulder blade can start to lift slightly away from the rib cage.
This combination β one overworked muscle up top, and weaker support muscles below β is what shapes the posture, not habit alone.
This imbalance tends to produce a recognisable shape:
β¦ Shoulder blades sit slightly off the rib cage instead of flat against it
β¦ Shoulders roll forward and sit slightly higher
β¦ The upper arms rotate inward
β¦ The upper back rounds forward to support the imbalance
In simple terms: rounded shoulders, a forward head, and a hunched upper back.
And this position changes more than how you look.
When the upper back rounds forward, the rib cage has less room to expand, and the diaphragm can't drop as fully with each breath.
Where we fit in π
At FFM, we assess which muscles are overworking and which have gone quiet, rather than just treating where it feels tight. We provide chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, and movement rehabilitation within our scope, and refer on where appropriate.
Our role is to help the muscles that switched off start doing their job again.
Part 2 next β how this changes your breathing, and why that matters beyond the chest.

RECOVERY TIMELINE SERIES Β· PART 3 OF 3 π
It doesn't hurt anymore. So can you go back?
Feeling ready and being ready aren't always the same thing. π€
Comfort usually returns before capacity does.
Pain often settles once tissue has healed enough for everyday movement. But your sport or activity asks for more than everyday movement.
Speed. Direction changes. Repeated load. Fatigue at the end of a session.
The gap between "comfortable" and "ready for that" is where most setbacks happen.
Factors commonly looked at before returning:
β¦ Strength compared to the other side
β¦ How the area responds the day after activity
β¦ Whether movement quality holds up when you're tired
β¦ Confidence in the movement, not only the absence of pain
β¦ The demands of the specific activity you're going back to
These are assessed together, which is why a professional review is worth having before returning.
Return usually happens in stages, not in one step.
Training before competing. Shorter sessions before full ones. Controlled movement before unpredictable movement.
Each stage gives useful information about how the area is coping. A staged return tends to be more reliable than a single decision point.
And if something flares up after returning, it isn't a failure.
It's usually information. The load went up faster than the area was ready for, or something further along the chain hadn't been addressed. Adjusting the pace and reviewing what's underneath is generally more useful than stopping altogether.
Where we fit in π
At FFM, we assess how you're moving, discuss the demands of what you're returning to, and talk through what a staged return could look like for you. We provide chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, and movement rehabilitation within our scope, and refer on where appropriate.
That completes the series. Part 1 covered the early phase, Part 2 covered when rehabilitation usually begins, and this one covers returning to activity.

RECOVERY TIMELINE SERIES Β· PART 2 OF 3 β±οΈ
"I'll start moving once the pain is gone."
It sounds sensible. But in rehabilitation, that isn't usually how the timeline works. π€
Rest helps early on. Extended rest brings its own changes.
When an area stays still for a long period:
β¦ Muscles around it gradually lose conditioning
β¦ Joints can become stiffer
β¦ The area becomes less tolerant to load
β¦ Movement patterns shift as other areas take over
None of this means rest is wrong. It means the timing of the next step matters.
Pain isn't the only signal.
Pain and tissue healing don't always move at the same speed. Some people feel comfortable well before the area is ready for load. Others still feel discomfort long after healing has progressed.
This is why rehabilitation is generally guided by more than pain alone.
Factors commonly looked at when deciding where to begin:
β¦ How the area responds to gentle movement
β¦ Range of motion compared to the other side
β¦ How much load feels manageable
β¦ How you're moving overall, not just the injured area
β¦ Where you are in the healing timeline
These are assessed together rather than in isolation, which is why a professional assessment is worth having.
And starting usually looks smaller than people expect.
Early stages often involve very small, controlled movements. Sometimes it's breathing and positioning before anything else. If it feels underwhelming at first, that's often a sign it's pitched correctly.
Where we fit in π
At FFM, we assess where you are in your recovery and discuss what a reasonable next stage might look like for you. We provide chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, and movement rehabilitation within our scope, and refer on where appropriate.
