Marshall Seifert | Obituary

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Marshall Seifert on 19 April 2026. A man who gave plenty to the game, as a player and most importantly, as a coach.

His contribution looks back to the late 60's, when he was a key member of the Otago Men's team that won the NZ Championship in 1968.

Transitioning to coaching, not long after, he took the reins of the New Zealand Junior Men's team.

Marshall would go on to lend his expertise to the media, spending time in the 80’s and early 90’s behind the microphone, working on the then Rheineck NZ Basketball League as a TV and Radio commentator, in the process winning the 1993 Mobil Radio Award for Best Sports Presenter, commentator or contributor for his work with 4ZB.

In 2025, Marshall received the Murray McMahon Award at the Basketball New Zealand awards night, which recognizes an outstanding contribution to Men's Basketball, and received the 30-year long Service to Basketball.

A Memorial Service for Marshall will be held in the Dunedin Club, 33 Melville St, Dunedin at 2pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Messages to the Seifert family C/- PO Box 5013, Dunedin 9054
