WEEKLY WRAP SEPTEMBER 23:
Christian Martin and Zion Anderson were members of the New Zealand team at the FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup in Wuhan last week.
The Kiwis finished pool play with a 3-1 record with wins against the Philippines (21-11), Spain (18-15) and Egypt (21-16) plus a loss to Latvia (21-15) but then were eliminated at the quarter-final stage after losing 21-17 to Lithuania.
Despite the loss New Zealand finished 6th in the 20-team tournament, the best ever finish by the Kiwis at the U23 World Cup.
Harbour Players in the Pros:

Sam Mennenga underlined his credentials as one of the best power forwards in the Australian NBL as he posted 27 points and 8 rebounds in the season opener at Spark Arena on Sunday - the BNZ Breakers beating the Illawarra Hawks 95-81.

Fourty eight hours later they were in Brisbane to face the Bullets (without the injured Taine Murray) but lost a tight encounter 88-85. Sam finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds in that one.

Sam Waardenburg made his Melbourne United debut in their 97-95 home loss to Adelaide 36ers – Sam with 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

Getting underway next week will be Isaac Fotu (Tochigi Brex, Japan), James Moors (Univeritas Pecs, Hungary) and Tai Webster (Limoges, France).

In addition the Women’s Tauihi Aotearoa begins this week. On Friday (September 25) Northern Kāhu – featuring Azure Anderson, Ella Fotu and Tayla Dalton – will visit Emme Shearer’s Tauranga Whai.

Tayla played for Tauranga, the defending champions, last season so will lock horns with her former teammates in the season opener.

Meanwhile Penina Davidson has remained with Tokomanawa Queens who entertain the Kāhu on Sunday September 27 with Millie Simpson and Southern Hoiho taking on Mainland Pouākai in the South Island derby on Saturday September 26.

Rapid League games precede every Tauihi fixture.

High School Nationals:

The 2026 Secondary Schools Nationals take place in Palmerston North next week and we will be keeping tabs on the progress of the Harbour teams.

Westlake Boys High and Rosmini College are the boys representatives with Westlake Girls High, Rangitoto College and Takapuna Grammar school will feature in the girls tournament.

OUR WEEKLY WRAP IS RIGHT HERE:
Two former Harbour reps will take to the floor at the FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup in Wuhan this week.

The playing squad features three members of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games team in Josh Book, Te Tuhi Lewis and former Westlaker Christian Martin. After an impressive campaign throughout the FIBA U23 3×3 Nations League, Rosmini College old boy Zion Anderson comes into the fold.

The squad was dominant during U23 Youth Nations League campaign, winning five of the six stops for a total record of 17-1 throughout the week in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Their nickname in full flight throughout the week, knocking down an insane 78 two pointers across the 6 stops (averaging 13 2PM per stop).

Basketball New Zealand’s 3×3 High Performance Manager, Nikolay Mikhailchuk, stoked with the group’s form ahead of this important tournament, one which has been circled on the 3×3 calendar for some time now.
“I’m incredibly pleased with the way this group has performed this season. They dominated their Asian conference, winning 17 of 18 games, and showed a really mature and confident style of 3×3 basketball. For our programme, the U23 World Cup is a pinnacle event."

The Kiwis are in Pool B at the World Cup, where on Wednesday they’ll take on the Philippines before the tough task of taking on European 3×3 powerhouses, Latvia. The team then takes a break, as is back to play Spain and Egypt on Friday.

Harbour Players in the Pros:

WEEKLY WRAP: WGHS - Westlake Girls High School and Westlake Boys High School double up.

From the Zone 1 Secondary Schools National Championship Qualifying Tournament that was held at Eventfinda Stadium last week, five North Harbour schools booked spots at the National Champs in Palmerston North later this month.

Three Girls teams have qualified with Westlake Girls High beating St Kentigern College in the final to clinch #1 seeding. Rangitoto College finished third and Takapuna Grammar fifth.

Westlake Boys, like Westlake Girls, completed the championship double of Auckland Premiers and Zone I Premierships. The other North Shore Boy’s school to qualify were Rosmini College with a sixth place finish.

The full list if Zone 1 (Zone 1 is the geographical area from the Bombay Hills to Cape Reinga) qualifiers:

OUR WEEKLY WRAP featuring Tall Blacks and high school news.

The Tall Blacks were in Manilla last weekend for World Cup Qualifying fixtures against Iran and Syria with the Harbour quartet of Sam Mennenga, Sam Waardenburg and the Webster brothers Corey and Tai playing a big part in a couple of victories.

It took overtime against Iran to eke out a 93-91 win although it was far more straightforward in a massive 126-74 victory over Syria.

The forward duo of the Sam’s were massive against Iran. Sam M contributed a 15-point, 13-rebound double double while Sam W (11 points and 7 rebounds) came up with a couple of massive blocks in the last ten seconds of overtime to deny the Iranians an equalising score.

Against Syria, Corey Webster led all scorers with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists while Sam M in just 17 minutes, scored 20 points. Tai Webster helped orchestrate the offence with 9 points and 9 assists while Sam W was an efficient 5 from 6 from the field for his 13 points.

Premier & Senior A High School success for Harbour Schools.

Appearing in three finals Harbour schools were successful in all three to claim the both the Premier Boys and Girls championships as well as the Boys Senior A championship at Eventfinda Stadium last Thursday.

The Zone I Qualifying Tournament is being played at Eventfinda Stadium this week with a bunch of Harbour teams in action. The top seven boys teams will advance to Nationals and the top six girls teams.

We are honoured and excited to be hosting the 2026 AA Zone 1 Premierships Tournament as the top 40 high school teams in Auckland and Northland (28 boys and 12 girls) aim to qualify for the Secondary School National Tournament.

The tournament will run from Wed 2nd Sept - Sat 5th Sept and games will take place at both Eventfinda Stadium and AUT North Campus.

Entrance is free, so come down, watch some phenomenal basketball, and support our Zone 1 school teams as they compete for a place at Nationals!

A massive congratulations to the three Harbour Secondary School teams that won their respective College Sport finals on Thursday night at Eventfinda Stadium.
Northcote College boys defeated Avondale College 57-56 to with the Senior A title after making a layup with 30 seconds to go!
Westlake Girls recovered from a 17 point deficit against St. Kents to win in the last few minutes 63-60 in a fantastic final, claiming the Premier Girls title.
Westlake Boys defeated Auckland Grammar 107-95 to become Premier Boys champions in a really exciting game between two of the best sides in New Zealand.
Congratulations to all three sides and good luck for this week's AA Qualifying Tournament.
