A couple of the A/W team were fortunate to be invited back to Korakonui School last month to help judge their annual maimai-building competition.

Students worked in teams of three, with one hour to design, build, and camouflage a maimai using as many natural materials as possible. Entries were judged on criteria such as camouflage, functionality, teamwork, creativity, and tidiness. The winning team impressed the judges with a well-camouflaged, functional maimai, well-equipped for rainy days with a potbelly stove!

Alongside the competition, students also took part in a duck-calling contest, "duck shooting" (using Nerf guns to shoot at decoys mounted on stands), and a quiz focused on gamebird hunting in New Zealand.

It was fantastic to see hunting traditions continue to be celebrated in schools in such a fun, creative, and engaging way.

First duck band entry received at 7:45am this morning. Nice and early. We will be sending out the information of each band to the person who reports it each Monday (if in the Auckland/Waikato/Northland area). This will tell you how far it has flown from banding site/age/sex of each bird. Always interesting.
We would appreciate if you can send in yours by using this page.

Send in Your Duck Band Details If you've successfully harvested a duck with a band on its leg, we need your help. This information is crucial to our research - so please provide as much detail as possible. This is for our records only.
