BLACK CAP WĀNANGA TUATORU 💛🖤🌟

Another first for our kura and our Black Cap leadership rōpū, as we cycled to Ruahāpia Marae for our third leadership wānanga of 2026. Our tamariki braved the icy cold and hit the roads and bike tracks as we made our way to Ruahāpia.

On arrival, we began our day with Mihi Whakatau in Karaitiana Takamoana.

From there, we gathered for a whanaungatanga circle and got deep and personal, sharing some of the biggest fears and challenges impacting us as we navigate our lives. We kōrero about the importance of opening up, supporting one another, and sharing our worries so that, together, we can find solutions and move forward. We also reflected on our goals for the remainder of 2026.

We then moved into a range of leadership learning activities, including learning our new school haka! 💪🔥

The highlight of the wānanga was an incredible waka-based learning experience and leadership wero. Drawing on their prior knowledge of the seven great waka, our tamariki explored how the qualities and lessons from various pūrākau could be woven into their own leadership. They then brought these whakaaro to life by creating their own hoe to represent the values and qualities they want to carry with them as rangatira.

Overall, another amazing opportunity for our Black Caps and an invaluable experience in their development as young rangatira of today and into the future.

Ngā mihi nui to Whaea Whitney, Mr Filipo, Mr English, Matua Wiremu and Matua Ben for helping provide this incredible opportunity for our tamariki.

Once again, thank you to our Ruahāpia Marae whānau who allow us to use this beautiful space for our kura and future generations. ❤️

Today, the weather held up just enough for us to raise the Tongan flag as part of our Tongan Language Week (Uike Kātoangaʻi ʻo e lea faka-Tonga) celebrations. The official theme for 2026 is Ko ʻetau hiva, ko e feʻunu mahuʻinga ia ki he moʻui ʻa e Tonga — "Our music is a vital strand of our Tongan culture". Massive Mālō 'aupito (thank you) to Whaea Alisi, who has organised some amazing challenges and activities for our 'apiako (kura). Our Flag raisers today were Whaea Alisi and the Kavanagh brothers, Tate and Cole. Tika (pronounced Dee-kaa meaning awesome) to have our Tongan whanau raise their flag and share their culture with us- Mālie- Mean As. We look forward to the rest of the week of celebrations, challenges and the chance to enjoy some yummy, Tongan delicacies!

Tomorrow, a group of 45 of our Year 6 students will be biking from Mahora School to Ruahāpia Marae as part of our Black Caps leadership wānanga.

Please be extra vigilant and take care when driving around the school and along the surrounding roads during morning drop-off from 8:30am. Our Year 6 Black Caps will be cycling along Frederick Street before turning onto Caroline Road, which is likely to be the busiest part of our route.

With a large group of 45 students cycling together, please slow down, give them plenty of space, and keep an extra eye out for our tamariki on the road.

WHANAUNGATANGA 🤝

Our school value focus for Week 5 and 6 this Term is Whanaungatanga. Whanaungatanga is all about building strong relationships and connections with others. At kura, it means creating a place where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and like they belong.

For our tamariki, this looks like making friends, supporting each other, working together, and showing kindness. By strengthening whanaungatanga, we help create a positive school community where everyone feels safe, connected, and ready to learn.
