Having 8 individual players from HB Lawn travel and compete at Nationals 2026 is a fantastic achievement. What an incredible weekend and an experience they’ll remember for a long time!

🏆🇳🇿 NZ NATIONALS – FINALS DAY! 🇳🇿🏆

We have 8 Lawn juniors competing at the NZ Nationals this week, and we’re incredibly proud of them all!

A special mention to Nikos Michalakis, who has battled his way through to the U11 Boys Final!

Also watch Caleb Alexander play off for 5th / 6th in a highly competitive U17 32 draw court 1.

What an achievement — we’ll be cheering you on all the way!

Very best of luck to club players Robin Johnson, Sharon Cannon and John 'Bugman' O'Halloran in Christchurch for the national mixed doubles starting today. Day 1 is 5 round qualifying, Sunday is split into categories for titles.

🌟 Junior Nationals Spotlight: Nikos Michalakis 🌟

As we count down to the GJ Gardner Junior Nationals, we're shining a light on some of the talented young players set to take the court. First up is Nikos Michalakis from Hawkes Bay. At just 9 years old and already a C1 player, Nikos is turning heads with his passion, dedication, and big goals for the future!

🏆 What’s one squash event you'd love to compete in someday?

When I’m older, the PSA Tour, but for now the British Junior Open has to be top of the list for me. It has the best kids from all around the world. In January 2027, Dad and I are flying over to compete, and I can’t wait! It’s going to be so cool seeing what other U11s are out there and testing myself against them.

🎯 What skill or quality have you been working hardest to build this year?

My backhand volley and my trickle boast.

🥇 What is your goal for Junior Nationals?

I’m 9, I won the Under 11s last year, so getting my name on the U13 cup would be soooo cool. Imagine that!

💪 Which current squash player inspires you and why?

I have a few!

My Dad. He’s super fit and runs around the court like he’s 18. Me, my brother, my sister and Dad have a joke about who will reach A Grade first. Dad is B1 and reckons he’ll get there first because he’s closest, but I’m not totally sure Dad is joking, which makes it even funnier! Dad trains with me heaps and pushes me hard, so he inspires me a lot.

Paul Coll. Heaps of Kiwis back PC. He’s New Zealand’s GOAT!

Oliver Dunbar. He’s fun and cheeky. He’s gone overseas living the dream, and that’s really cool to see.

🙌 What is your favourite part of competing at Junior Nationals?

Playing and seeing my friends from all over New Zealand who I don’t get to see that often, being court rats between every match, and getting in some three-quarter court. It’s the best!

B GRADE SUPER CHAMPS!

The HB Lawn lads combined with HBSRC B Grade Men have come away with the WIN this morning!

Coming in as the underdogs, the boys dug deep and came out on top 3–2, finishing 7th place — one spot above their seed!

But the wins haven’t just been on the squash court! These boys have made the most of the trip with darts, mini putt, Sequence and family dinners — the perfect mix of squash, laughs and team bonding!

A huge thank you to HB Lawn for their financial support in helping make this opportunity possible.

And a massive thank you to Dino and Brady for taking the reins and getting these juniors the chance to line up at B Grade Super Champs. What an opportunity for them to test themselves, learn, compete and, most importantly, have a good time doing it!

And I have no doubt that a number of these young lads will quite possibly be A Grade this time next year so was this possibly their last opportunity at Super Champs?!

What a crew. What a weekend. What an experience!

Good luck to our HB Lawn / HBSRC B Grade Men who are playing off for 7th & 8th today. Finish the weekend strong, boys!

A huge special mention to the Havelock North combined HBSRC Ladies B Grade team, who are playing off for 1st & 2nd at 2pm! Seeded 7th, they have pulled off an amazing run to make the final. What an effort! Good luck ladies!

And what a tournament for Surf City, making it through to THREE finals!

Combined HB Lawn team came up against Masterton this afternoon and went down 4–1.

Well done Brady on getting the one win and putting one on the board!

Now it’s time to swap the squash rackets for darts tonight before they hit the courts again tomorrow for their final round!
