Bat Lore 📖 finishing Chapter 6. Grain Structure & Willow Colour

While we do not like to take an absolute position on the number of grains that is optimal, the best compromise is usually between seven and nine grains. Bats with this number of grains are usually durable and perform well. They may not have the fantastic initial performance of bats with more grains, but they will last a lot longer.

This is not a hard and fast rule though, as the natural variation of willow means that some clefts with more or less grains perform exceptionally well and last a long time.

Clefts can also come in different colours. Red wood on one edge of a cleft is because the cleft is part heartwood. The sap wood, which is the outside of the trunk, is lighter and most bats are mainly of sap wood with a small amount of heartwood on one edge.

There are a variety of opinions on the pros and cons of bats with or without heartwood. At Laver & Wood we understand both sides of the argument but take a neutral view on heartwood in bats.

Years of working in the bat making industry have taught us that whether a bat is all sapwood, all heartwood or somewhere in between there appears to offer practically zero difference in terms of overall performance.

Some batsmen have developed a real preference for bats with a certain number of grains. From a bat making perspective while grains have some small influence on the performance and durability of a bat it is not as important as getting the right weight and profile and sweet spot position. At Laver & Wood we are far more concerned about the latter three variables than the number of grains.
