Follow our journey as we evlove and develop to help people understand horses better. Originally called Oakshott equestrian because we were on Oakshott road we have decided to rename the page The PONY Collab. this us because we are a collaboration of talents, ideas and inspirations. it's not one person it's many and we are always learning and developing our skills. We started off doing lessons but quickly found we had a unique service to offer people with ponies. There are no children that ride and train like Giselle does . She has ridden close to 200 horses and ponies broken in, started, restarted or retrained dozens of ponies for people and the results speak for themselves. Check out some our latest projects. They are trained by children because ultimately they are going to be ridden by children and what better way to get them started than by the very size of rider that they will end up with. Ponies quickly work out who is on their backs and what's expected and there is nothing better than to get your new pony child proof. Looking for some advice.

Arya is one of the kindest kids out there, her empathy is the 👌.

She sees a lif of things and wants to help. Her support of Giselle has been a life saver.

When you see things you have had your eyes open to, you can't unsee them.

It's not just students, it's teachers as well
Most of us dealt with a teacher or 2 at school who projected on to us.

I was a sassy teenager, I took none of it. I looked down the barrel of the gun and said go ahead make my day.

If this situation was me, I know what I would have done. I did do it in 6th form then boycotted the class till the teacher apologized to the girl.

But maybe there is a better way. How should Arya or any child handle a teacher who has stepped across a line. Frustrated or not, feeling guilty I am sure but I don't think it's ok to tell a kid to suck it up just because his tears makes you uncomfortable.

Bit late on this one but it took me awhile to gather my thoughts.

As long as you care for your horses and get their needs met, it's no one's business what you do or don't do with them.

Horses don't care if they don't have a purpose other than a paddock ornament.

The question is, is it right or fair or enough?

Aside from liberty every horse or pony we own, goes out, ridden or not. They are All handled weekly, wormed, hooves done 4-6 weeks, teeth done yearly, all are taught to float, lead, tie up, go out on their own, legs handled, get use to traffic, get use to flapping things, stand on different things, lead through small gaps, to wait, to lead others, to go forward, the list goes on.

It pains me when the basics are not covered because it puts the horse at risk not only in cases or emergency but at risk of neglect.

Just because they are ok doing nothing doesn't mean we should do nothing.

100% thankful to Stephanie MacFarlane for helping Giselle at Brookby on Sunday.

Saturday we had, not such a great practice day. I've said it before, Giselle has no formal training. She is raw talent

One of the organizers at the practice day wanted to know who Giselle's trainer was because she said something was wrong with sugar, refusing the jumps.

I had to say no one, because there is no one. I'm not a jumper, I only have the very basics to share. Giselle is self taught. I guess at that ESNZ level they expect you to have got there with help.

Steph use to do all our school holiday programmes back in the day, such a great calm kind rider and Giselle certainly got some inspiration from hanging out with her growing up.

At Brookby we didn't know how it would go. Steph was there competing too and gave Giselle some instruction. The difference was huge. Although they won the 90cm and came 5th in the 1m. The 1m round was actually faster and calmer without cutting corners and taking risks.

Really impressed and so very thankful 🙏

Yesterday I posted up about a horse that viciously attacked a woman in the corral. The link is in the other post but I'll post it in the comments again. Initially they talked about pts and doing research because it was so unusual.

I said I believed it was a tumor. Testing just came back now and sure enough even though they scanned the ovaries this mare has ovarian tumors.

Her hormones are higher than some stallions hence the behaviour.

So while some people are still saying it might be hormones but it's still disrespectful I 100% guarantee any woman going through perimenopause that has a frontal lobe and critical thinking can understand sometimes you lose your 💩 and it has nothing to do with respect.

This is why I post because there is that narrative that horses are capable of human traits that they do not possess because they do not have a frontal lobe. 😒

Thoughts on a Thursday #2

Last week I spoke about horses grazing on their own, this week I want to talk about horses with Dirt and the people who want them without it.

Why are horses the only animal we give this label to? Even dogs who are far better at problem solving don't get called dirty. In fact if they misbehave people generally blame poor training, the owner but not the dog. Yet horses are suppose to be responsible for their behaviour 🙄.

You wouldn't put that on any animal in a zoo, no matter how well handled or trained they are so why is it expected of a horse?

When you ask for a horse with no dirt, you are simply asking for a horse to remain silent because you either can't be bothered learning their language or you are too inexperienced to understand that behaviour is communication.

This is why so many people buy a horse or pony, it goes wrong and they blame the previous owner. It's also how people like Jody Albert get away with selling horses because people don't understand how to read a horse.

This puts you in a dangerous position and you risk injury because the horse literally has to be completely shutdown in order for it not to communicate. It doesn't behave itself 100% of the time because it's well trained, it behaves itself because it knows there is no point trying anymore. That's a 💩 thing to want in a horse.

Horses are not unpredictable, they are not dirty, they aren't trying to get away with it and they don't plot and plan. They are incapable of that.

All horses can buck, bite, bolt, rear, kick etc... in the right circumstances. The responsibility is on you to learn the signs before it happens. Any horse that is quick with it's reactions has learned that they aren't listened to so they are less tolerant. In order for them to learn they don't need to go 0-100 you need to learn the language. They need to know you are listening.

I'll put the link in the comments to the horse that attacked the woman. Its savage. It's also extremely rare. I can confidently say I have never met a horse that didn't give a warning, some give way more than others.

Not everyone's cup of tea I am sure but I follow this guy because he stands up for people who are often treated poorly by others. He is kind and he is a great writer and I like the vibe.

So when he posted this which is literally what my are about I had to share it. He has millions of followers and always 10s of 1000s of likes on every post so if he is feeling it then I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Spread a bit of kindness, cost you nothing but will give you so much ❣️ it starts with the small things.

Trying to eliminate the saddle altogether, tonight Giselle jumped in the ba****ck pad. She said he still turned his head right around when she did up the girth, so I'm going to say thats either pain memory or some type of discomfort from the girth.

Watching him move tonight, he seemed free moving. Not all the jumps were perfect but he was forward into them and moving well.

When I asked Giselle if there was a difference, she said he felt relaxed.

So we will try again with the saddle and then on Sunday when he competes we will make a decision whether to jump in the pad or a saddle.

In the meantime we will try something to help with any discomfort he might be experiencing associated with girthing.

Im also very thankful we did all the "leg"-work 😆 with Liberty when she was only a few months old if that. At 10 months old now she's a pro getting a trim, stands there hoof on the stand better than many many ponies I have trimmed over the years.

Halter trained, half float trained and lead trained, we haven't been so on to that but she can tie up at least as well.

Some people like to let foals be foals but we didn't flood her with training every day, literally the hooves took 2-3 sessions. I haven't touched her hooves for 7 weeks.

Halter training took a bit longer and tie up went with the hoof training and was a non event.

Get it done early because you never know when you are going to need them to be calm, haltered or tied up. Nothing worse than dealing with an injured animal who hasn't been handled enough.

Here we are at Tuesday again

Let me start by saying I had an amazing weekend with all the things I wanted to do and needed to do.

It was near perfect 👌

And although that's not news worthy or sensational, we need to appreciate all the little things in life.

I can't be the only one though, so I know it might be something small or trivial but share it, drop it in the comments because I want to hear it.

What we put in to life we get out in one form or another so why not put a little 🌟 illumination in to the darkness

We need to pay attention to all the subtitles horses give in communication before they lash out because we didn't listen when they whispered.

Today I rode Zadel and I can tell you the saddle was ok, he moved freely, it wasn't pinching, lifting, squeezing or shifting.

He had his head low the entire ride which is totally new to me, usually his head is up and he isn't relaxed. Today he was chill.

I did notice though when I got on he was uncomfortable with the mounting, even though I used a block.

So in my conclusion, there is something else going on. Some discomfort caused by the girth being done up and with the mounting. Further investigation is required but for now I am pretty confident this saddle is a better fit than the previous few he has had.
