Hey team,

A heads-up for anyone heading into the Remutaka hills for a hunt this weekend.

The Moa Conservation Trust volunteers will be out servicing their trap lines this Saturday, 31 October, covering the eastern slopes of the Orongorongo River from Red Rock Stream through to the Papatahi Track.

If you're planning a hunt in the area, please be mindful of the volunteers out there doing the hard mahi and give them plenty of space to get on with their work.

These volunteers put in a huge amount of time and effort helping protect our native wildlife, so let's do our bit and support the great work they're doing.

Cheers team, and good luck to our guys heading out to the Mukamuka Valley for a monthly management hunt 👍

Celebrating Our 2026 Antler, Horn & Tusk Champions!

A big congratulations to all the winners of this year's Hutt Valley NZDA Antler, Horn & Tusk Club Competitions, with the awards presented at last week's Club Night!

We had some outstanding heads entered this year, with one of our biggest turnouts in years. It's fantastic to see so many members getting involved and keeping this great branch tradition alive.

Each of our category winners received a specially engraved HVNZDA presentation knife to commemorate their achievement, while their names will take pride of place in our trophy cabinet alongside generations of successful hunters who have gone before them.

These competitions have been part of our branch's history for decades. They're about more than just trophies and impressive heads. They're about celebrating the hunt, sharing stories, recognising achievements and passing on the traditions of hunting to the next generation.

A huge thanks to everyone who entered, those who helped with the measuring and scoring, and everyone who contributed to another successful year.

Well done to all our winners. You've earned your place in branch history!

October Club Night – It's Prizegiving Time!

This Wednesday 21st October, we're celebrating the best of the best at our 2026 Hutt Valley NZDA Club Competition Prizegiving!

It's our annual Antler, Horn & Tusk and Photographic Competition awards night, with all the winning trophies and photographs on display!

Come along, check out some impressive heads, admire the fantastic photography and hear a few hunting stories behind them. We'll also be presenting this year's winners with their awards and engraved Hunter's Element knives!

And there's a fantastic door prize up for grabs!

Wet, Wild and Learning to Stay Alive!

Our 2026 Hutt Valley HUNTS crew braved the spring weather this week, getting their feet wet (and pretty much everything else!) during their practical river crossing exercise.

River crossings are one of the biggest dangers in the NZ backcountry, so learning how to cross safely is a vital part of the HV HUNTS programme.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated Hutt Valley HUNTS safety team and volunteer instructors put in a huge amount of work to make this exercise happen safely. It's a great example of what our branch community is all about – people giving up their time, sharing their knowledge and helping the next generation of hunters develop valuable skills.

Our 2026 Hutt Valley NZDA HUNTS Course headed into the hills, basing ourselves at Waikuku Lodge for four days of bushcraft, navigation, practical skills and plenty of good times with our 24 students and volunteer instructors.

A huge thank you to the Department of Conservation for their ongoing sponsorship and support, helping us introduce new hunters to our backcountry and the skills needed to enjoy it safely and responsibly.

Weekends like this really show what being part of a strong branch community is all about. Volunteers giving up their time, sharing their knowledge, building friendships and helping the next generation of hunters get started.

A massive thanks to our fantastic team of instructors and helpers who make it all happen. Without these dedicated volunteers, there simply wouldn't be a HUNTS programme.

Great people, great country and a great branch community!

WINNER WINNER VENISON DINNER!

A big congratulations to Sam Butters and his son, who took home the $500 Hunters Element prize pack after having a crack at our Guess the Shells competition at last weekend’s Summit to Sea Expo!

A huge thanks to our mates at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, Hutt Valley for supplying the awesome prize!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the NZDA Hutt Valley stand for a yarn, entered our competitions and got involved. It was great to see so many familiar and new faces!

Here’s a great example of what our NZDA Hutt Valley club nights are all about!

At our last club night, we had Kiwidad Adventures come along and share what him and Hikmicro are all about, giving us hands on experience with thermals and night vision, tips & best practises.

These evenings regularly feature guest speakers, local businesses, vendors and experienced hunters sharing their knowledge with the community.

Joining our club means learning from those who live and breathe hunting, discounts on products and opportunities to get amongst other likeminded individuals.

Whether you’re an experienced hunter or completely new to it, sign up and come along and see what it’s all about!

17 shooters, awesome weather and plenty of friendly rivalry at Kaitoke yesterday!

After 21 years, the NZDA Interclub Challenge Shield shoot was back on, with everyone putting their skills to the test across the centrefire and .22 events. A great turnout to get this tradition firing again!

Congratulations to the team from Kapiti Deerstalkers Club, who narrowly took out the win. Enjoy the bragging rights, team… we’ll be coming for them next time!

A big thank you to all the Range Officers and other team members who pitched in to make it a great day, and to everyone who stepped up to compete.

This shoot is now set to be a regular feature on our range calendar, so there’ll be plenty more chances to settle the score!
