Fly Fishing Bootcamp 2027 Schedule

You’ve probably read that quote above somewhere before. You’ve probably also read that “Trout don’t live in ugly places.” It’s true - the sport of fly fishing has an allure, a charm that transcends it just being a bloodsport. To some it’s a way to catch fish, to others it’s an art form, and to some of us it’s a lifestyle. From movies to books to our Presidents to kids of all ages, fly fishing is here and it’s cool and we love it.

Fly fishing can be a difficult sport to master, and can be daunting to the new recruit, so let us help you train and learn and appreciate the sport with our intensive and detail-oriented fly fishing school. Bootcamp is split into a 2 day event: Day 1 is a two hour in-classroom event where you'll learn the basics of the sport, the history, and casting mechanics. Day 2 is an all-day on the river clinic learning about trout stream entomology and where you get to apply everything you've learned and catch your first fly-caught trout!

Farino here, as usual. If you're getting this e-mail from me that means that you really dig what we're putting down... and you're probably just as addicted to the sport as we are.

First and foremost, thanks for continuing to support our shop. I know it's been a rough year for fishing in the DC metro area, and as things start to get even more weird as we approach another election cycle, know that we're a safe space for you to come vent about how you didn't get enough time to chase brookies this spring or that your gear still stinks from shad fishing among the remnants of a raw sewage spill. We feel your pain. Thanks to shop and personal responsibilities, we haven't been able to do what we love as well. I can count on one hand how many fishing days I've been able to take this year, and it's not due to lack of trying. Shop struggles, family crises, drought, and an injured shop dog have made this year one of the most difficult for me personally.

This field report is sort of a precursor to what's going on in the shop. We have some plans in the works that are not only going to make you want to stop by the shop more often, but will also inspire you to get out more and do what you love. Nothing is official until we make the announcements, but we're working towards a shop reboot, including product selections and assortments, continuing our educational offerings, more local fishing opportunities, and actually working with local businesses to expand what we do.

As we push through 2026 towards the holidays in preparation for our 10th year in business (OMG! I KNOW!), it is my goal to continue to make this the best flyshop experience you've ever had. Smallmouth Streamers - Madtoms & Sculpins (Intermediate) - https://mailchi.mp/districtangling/fly-tying-saturdays-sculpins-2026

Sculpins populate warmwater and coldwater rivers all over the United States and blend in so well with the river bottom that you doin't see them. But smallmouth bass and trout do. And they like them rare, with a side of fresh cranefly and scud salad. Often the strikes are violent, and trout will even "shark" your fly - creating a v-wake across the surface of the water and they chase your fly all the way back to your rod tip. Scary cello music sold separately. That poor Kintner boy.

The mayfly is a long studied and loved trout stream insect that epitomize what fly fishing is all about. Artists, fishers, and writers wax poetic about the beautiful sailboat-winged insect that you see floating down rivers en masse, having their lifecycle interrupted by a stealthy trout sitting just below the surface while sipping on the emerging insects. The first mention of the mayfly dates back to 2000 BCE in the "Epic Of Gilgamesh", a tale of the life of the Babylonian ruler, and was written on clay tablets.

Today we celebrate all the dads that deserve breakfast in bed, an afternoon casting to panfish, a cold b**r and a hot dog at a barbecue, and maybe a nap on the recliner today.

But not only are we wishing happy Father’s Day to all the dads we know and love because we share DNA with them, but also to the dads that stepped up to make sure we had a father figure around. Step dads. Uncles. Neighbors. Mentors and teachers and counselors. The ones that supported you because they saw potential. The one that takes you fishing or teaches you how to throw a baseball or explains electricity or shows you how to be observant or kind or responsible.

Happy Father’s Day. To ALL the dads, even if you don’t have the title.

The Klinkhammer is a world-renowned dry fly and emerger pattern created by Dutch angler Hans van Klinken in the 80's. Designed to imitate emerging aquatic insects trapped in the surface film, it features a unique curved hook that leaves the body hanging deep below the water while the parachute hackle keeps the fly visible and floating on top.
