Join Opera Montana Artistic Director Michael Sakir for a robust, in-depth conversation about Norman Maclean's novella A River Runs Through It, which inspired the new opera of the same name, premiering this September at the Ellen Theatre.

Book Club Membership is FREE. 📖

Book Club members will learn more about the themes throughout the novella, including nature & spirituality, mental health & addiction, and fly-fishing. Each meeting will have a special guest expert on the topic being discussed.

Matt Foss - Librettist📝

Matt is an award-winning writer and director, with multiple Jeff Awards (Chicago’s top theatre prize) for his adaptations of Upton Sinclair’s THE JUNGLE and Remarque’s ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and a recipient of the Kennedy Center’s David Mark Cohen Playwriting Award and Citizen Artist Award.

He was named one of Austin Film Festival’s Top 25 Screenwriters to Watch and has acted, directed and written for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks since 2003. He is a professor at the University of Toledo.

📣 A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT - MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM

Kelley Rourke - Librettist✍️

Kelley is a librettist, translator and dramaturg. She has collaborated with composers including John Glover, Laura Karpman, Ben Moore, Kenji Oh, Zach Redler, Kamala Sankaram and Wang Lu on new operas, and she is the 2024 recipient of OPERA America’s Campbell Opera Librettist Prize. Kelley is currently collaborating with composer Christopher Tin on O'Keeffe: Kiss the Sky, which will have its world premiere at Washington National Opera in spring 2027.

She is the 2024 recipient of OPERA America’s Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, and she has received two commissioning grants from the New York State Council on the Arts.
