The relationship between a coach and a growing Jiu-Jitsu athlete is a delicate one.
Knowing when to push an athlete further and when to pull them back is a skill set that is often overlooked by outsiders. It takes experience, patience, and most importantly, trust.
The trust an athlete has in their coach isn’t given—it’s earned over time. Through countless practices, difficult conversations, victories, losses, setbacks, and moments when the athlete needs someone to believe in them more than they believe in themselves.
That bond can last a lifetime.
Some kids will eventually grow out of Jiu-Jitsu. They may stop competing, move on to other sports, or simply take a different path. But the lessons they learned along the way—the discipline, resilience, confidence, accountability, and ability to overcome adversity—will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
To all the coaches who spend countless hours on the mats, who show up early, stay late, and invest in their students far beyond teaching techniques:
Thank you.
You aren't just helping athletes become better Jiu-Jitsu fighters. You're helping shape better human beings.
And sometimes, the greatest victories happen long after they leave the mat. 🥋
