We asked 2,112 TCS New York City Marathon runners what really happens when the marathon starts marathon-ing — aka mile 20 — aka “the wall.”

Turns out, plenty of us felt prepared. Plenty of us still hit the wall.

54% started faster than planned, 71% felt prepared but 83% still hit the wall, amongst others.

To say we had a blast at the IMT Des Moines Marathon would be an understatement. From connecting with runners pre-race at the expo, to running together at the Shakeout Run, to cheering our voices out, to celebrating afterwards, we are thrilled to share these moments with you all and witness the phenomenal spirit of the running community here in Des Moines.

Ryler Hanson is your men’s Wild Card recipient and will be heading to Kenosha, WI for the Brooks Midwest XC Championships! ⚡️💙🩶

Ryler is a junior at Bondurant-Farrar and a standout athlete in the Greater Des Moines area in Class 3A.

Ryler truly embodies the spirit of the sport. He secured his PR of 16:01.9 at the Iowa State Qualifier in 2025, and we know he’s not done there.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have our FIRST EVER female Fleet Feet Wild Card recipient, Ele Wharton! ✨💜💛

Ele is a senior at Johnston High School. In her junior year, Ele set a PB of 18:12.4 during her State XC meet performance, and we can’t wait to see what is to come for her this season!

On behalf of Fleet Feet Des Moines, Ele will be heading to the Brooks Midwest XC Championships in Kenosha, WI. Thank you for being a leader on and off the course, and congratulations on being selected as the Wild Card recipient!
