Falls at home can often be prevented with a few simple changes. 🏠

Take a quick look around your home and consider these 5 ways to make everyday movement safer:

Clear the way — remove throw rugs, cords, and clutter from walking paths.
Light it up — use bright, non-glare lighting throughout the home.
Have a seat — keep a sturdy chair nearby when getting dressed or putting on shoes.
Secure some support — consider grab bars, a shower seat, and a handheld showerhead in the bathroom.
Store for success — keep frequently used items between waist and shoulder height to avoid unsafe reaching or stepstools.

A physical or occupational therapist can also help identify fall hazards and recommend ways to make your home safer.

Your vision and hearing play an important role in good balance, which is needed for everyday activities to prevent falls. 👀👂

Taking care of your eyes and ears is an important part of staying confident, active, and safe. A few simple habits can make a difference:

👁️ Get an eye exam every year and keep your prescription current.
👓 Wear your glasses as prescribed and avoid sunglasses indoors.
🪜 Use extra care with bifocals when navigating stairs, curbs, and uneven surfaces.
👂 Check your hearing regularly and talk with a provider about any changes.
💡 Light it up! Add nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways to make nighttime movement safer.

Fall prevention isn't about doing one big thing—it’s about making small changes that work together to help you stay strong and independent.

💊Taking more than one medication can increase the chance of side effects and medication interactions and raise your risk of . That’s why it’s important to talk to your doctor regularly!

🌿Here are 5 things you can do to make medication use safer:

Take medications only as prescribed. Follow the directions for timing, dosage, and food.
Keep an updated medication list. Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, and supplements.
Schedule regular medication reviews. Review your medications at least once a year, whenever something new is added, or when your health changes.
Report side effects. Dizziness, sleepiness, confusion, unsteadiness, or changes in coordination are important to discuss with your doctor.
Use one pharmacy when possible. This can help your pharmacist spot duplicate medications, interactions, or doses that may not be safe.

A simple medication review can be an important step in reducing fall risk and staying safe and independent.

❓Did You Know?
1 in 4 older adults fall each year, but only half tell their doctor.

If you’ve fallen, you’re not alone! Use these tips to help make conversations with your health care provider easier and more productive:

• Write down your questions and concerns before your appointment
• Ask about a fall-risk assessment
• Discuss whether a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or other specialist could help
• Be honest about any falls or feelings of unsteadiness
• Take notes during your appointment
• Ask questions if there’s anything you don’t understand

Talking openly with your health care provider is an important step toward reducing fall risk and staying active, confident, and independent.

💪 Being Active as We Get Older

Staying active is about so much more than exercise—it’s about maintaining the strength, confidence, and independence to keep doing the things you enjoy.

Regular physical activity can help: • Improve strength, balance, and stamina
• Reduce the risk of falls and injury
• Support brain and heart health
• Make everyday activities easier
• Help you stay independent longer
And you don’t have to do everything at once. A walk, a fitness class, strength training, gardening, or simply moving more throughout your day all count.

The best place to start? Right where you are.
🧡 Start simple.
🧡 Find activities you enjoy.
🧡 Grab a friend and move together.
🧡 Build strength, balance, and confidence over time.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. Every minute adds up!
