❗️ATTENTION❗️
Due to the threat of incoming severe weather, we will once again err on the side of caution and suspend training tonight for the Junior Lions and Adult BJJ.
Be Safe
Sorry for the Delay. We closed for the evening due to potential Severe Weather. The original post did not publish. Apologies for any inconvenience.
Be Safe!

Congrats to Sam Prentice on his promotion to Purple Belt.
OSS!
All,
After careful consideration of
1) The unexpected and unpredictable nature of Alabama winter weather.
2) The poor driving habits in inclement weather of local drivers
3) The potential for dreaded Black Ice
I have decided to cancel Monday 6:30pm and Tuesday 6am group classes at Lionheart.
Unfortunately our area is on the boarder of the expected issues and our class times are on the cusp of the expected arrival.
All that taken into account I have been advised to err on the side of caution.
Enjoy your families!

TopHalf Series: Hip Swivel / Long Step
Adding to the arsenal of options from TopHalf, this one works well to thwart the bottom guy’s knee shield as an alternative to the low knee “windshield wiper” staple from the last video, or as an approach you can go right into. Remember, the goal is to get to the pressure position from half guard, but the knee shield hinders you from doing that. So we must deal with it.

Entering Mount from Top-Half Pressure
——————————————————
In the next phase of this topside half-guard series, Prof. George goes over passing options from the pressure choke: this one on entering into the mount
•
Secure your underhook, tuck it towards his face with your head to begin applying the pressure choke again
•
The choke will let you go into mount
•
As you apply pressure for the choke, your knees come up and you slide that knee down into the mount
•
As he tries to take tension off from your shoulder, you can use the other leg to assist in clearing the ankle if the guy keeps it locked
•
Keep the top hooks in so he can’t push your leg back into the half guard
•
He can’t roll you from here. If he tries, the mount is yours.
•
When you’re ready, bring them down to secure the mount

Short Topside Half-Guard Q&A
Going over a couple quick questions on the position we’ve been working over the last couple weeks: giving the under-hook and connecting the position to both mount and side control.

Line Up Your Sights for the Perfect Armbar
————————————————————
The back leg is key to keeping the armbar tight enough that your opponent cannot slide his elbow/arm out
Line up your back foot, knee, and head in the same way you’d align your sights to fire a handgun
Use the top guy’s leg to get that tight alignment
Then fire, but only after you’ve taken your aim
Secondly, if you haven’t heard Prof. George say it enough:
The omoplata is there as a back up!
Swim the arm so your opponent cannot escape,
Put your head on the mat,
And control his hips/belt or put up the good ol’ spit-shield
Or all of the above... whatever’s necessary
Check out the entire 58 minute private lesson on YouTube: https://youtu.be/B5CV1Zy77vE
where Professor George works with two white belts (one of them recently promoted to blue 😉) on their closed guard game.
Smaller details of the position are covered for both the bottom and top guy,
Kimura, Omoplata, sweeping concepts, and some instructional rolling featured as well.

Topside Half-Guard - Turning the Face
——————————————————
Turn the face in topside half-guard to prevent the bottom guy from sh*****ng out to clear his bottom knee
•
This allows you to reclaim an even better position to begin going for the lapel or lat muscle and apply the pressure choke from the previous videos,
•
which can lead to a pass into side control or mount when the opponent does all that he can to relieve pressure off of him

Topside Half-Guard Pt. 2 (Passing)
————————————————
When applying pressure as shown in the Pt. 1 video, the bottom guy will most likely try to bridge and roll you off of him.
This opens up the golden opportunity to slide right into mount.
Ultimately, you give your opponent two options:
be choked from pressure or let you pass from half.

Topside Half-Guard Pt. 1 (Pressure Choke)
———————————————————
Think about passing into half-guard as a success as the top guy
•
Hide your ankle and lock the opponent’s hip
•
Then you can grab the lapel and begin the pressure choke, even if the bottom guy has the under-hook
•
How it works in no-gi shown at the end

Blocking the kimura and what to do about it:
————————————————————
Professor George showcases how he oftentimes blocks the kimura by hiding the hand in the thigh and blocking his opponent’s hips.
How do you deal with your opponent blocking your kimura like this? Well, here are a few options:
1. Bump sweep
2. Arm drag
3. Hip swivel
We ran through these different options in class with a partner and drilled through them all. Give them a try!
Why it’s important to stand when passing guard.
•
Many make the mistake of staying on their knees within their opponent’s guard, when they could make it a 4 limbs vs. 2 situation rather than using arms alone against legs that will typically always be stronger.
In-Depth on Sweeping [Private Lesson] (Butterfly Sweep + more 🧹)
How is the butterfly sweep typically taught, and how can it be made better?

Arm-Drag Series w/ Q&A: to the Omoplata OR Kimura
When the opponent strips their arm out from the arm drag, these options open up from the position on either arm. Also a bit of troubleshooting Q&A near the end.
The Flower Sweep:
The flower sweep off of the arm drag with a couple of options based on your opponent‘s reaction.
What if he sprawls the leg?
How can you set it up?
