Warning: this post gets nerdy! 🤓 Can’t figure out why a skill isn’t hitting? We can bet it’s one of these 5 elements. The Big 5 is simply putting language to cheer skills so that your athletes can understand where a skill is breaking down.

Because a great coach is somebody that can help figure out why a skill isn’t working, identify where the breakdown is happening, then communicate to a cheerleader how to apply corrections and drills.

Coaches, save this for the next time a skill isn’t hitting and use The Big 5 to break the skill down!

Another episode of fix your base grips: This time we’re focusing on the coed hands or extension grip! You want to imagine holding a can is spray paint in your stunt so you can support your flyer from the ball of their foot through their heel. Having the correct hands and extension grips will help you hit harder stunts like bump through skills! Get the full tutorial on mastering grips and the toss in The Hybrid Library!

Sideline season is officially here and your team’s training priorities should change with it.

Summer gave your athletes time to learn, progress, and explore. Now it’s time to narrow the focus and turn those skills into something they can perform with confidence and control.

Right now, School Cheer Coaches should prioritize:

▪️ cleanliness
▪️ competence

Clean up the details. Build consistency. Give your athletes reps under pressure. And don’t fall prey to the trap of chasing more and more difficulty just because you can.

Because eventually you have to stop asking, “What else could we do?” And start asking, “What can this team do consistently.”

The focus should now shift away from exploring new skills to executing:

☑️ Cleaner skills
☑️ Stronger skills
☑️ More consistent skills

This is one piece of our new Season Training Roadmap, created to help school cheer coaches understand what their teams should prioritize throughout the year. We’ll be breaking down each season at a time. 👏

Time for another Skill of the Week Challenge! Join in to get featured and to set your season up for success! Here’s how it works: 

1. On Mondays, we drop a skill here - This week’s skill challenge is a little different. What we want to see? Heel Stretches! But we’re giving you a little creative freedom in how you get there this week! If you’re just mastering the basics, start with a straight up or toss stretch. If you’re intermediate, maybe a full up pull through or a low to high full around pull through. If you’re more advanced, show us what you’ve got to a heel stretch! We’re looking for pretty lines this week, not necessarily the hardest skill 🙂‍↔️
