It measures how well your body takes in and uses oxygen, and it is quietly one of the best predictors of health and longevity we have.
Here is what the research says. In a Cleveland Clinic study of over 122,000 adults, fitness level was strongly linked to how long people lived, and there was no upper limit to the benefit. Every small bump in your VO2 max, about one MET, is linked to a 13 to 15 percent lower mortality risk. And the best part, this number is trainable at any age.
