Honorary Merit Club member Charlie Nikitas cemented his place in Illinois Open history on Wednesday by claiming his second career title and delivering one of the most impressive scoring performances in the event’s 77 years.

The 2024 champion added the 2026 crown to become the 16th multiple-time winner and the 12th player to capture the championship twice, setting new 36-hole (18 under) and 54-hole (20 under) scoring records along the way.

His week began with a course-record 63 at The Club at Wynstone in round one, which he matched again in round two.

Other standout Merit Club performances included Timmy Crawford (T4, -13), Danny Fisher (T10, -10), Aiden Lafferty (T10, -10), Ryan Andrews (a) (T15, -7), Brian Ohr (T22, -5), and Connor Polender (T26, -4), with Luke Kruger (a) and Dom Lucchesi (a) also in the field.

It’s hard to imagine a better showing from one club in Illinois Open history—proof that great golf starts at the Merit Club. Outstanding play all around. Golf is fun!

Your 77th Illinois Open Champion - from Glenview, Illinois - Charlie Nikitas!

Charlie is now a two-time champion of the State Championship, after his record-setting 54-holes in this year’s event.

In Memoriam

It is with deep sadness The Merit Club informs the membership of the passing of Mrs. Nancy Guthrie in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Nancy and her husband, Dr. Frank Guthrie, were founding members of The Merit Club, and her presence was an integral part of our club’s history and spirit.

A celebration of life is being planned for September. Additional details will be shared with the membership as soon as they are finalized.

The Merit Club extends its heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers to Warren, Catherine, and the entire Guthrie family during this difficult time.
