TALIB BENSOUDA CHOSEN TO LEAD COALITION 2026

UNITE Party leader Talib Ahmed Bensouda has been declared the flag bearer of the 2026 opposition coalition after months of negotiations among opposition parties and political movements ahead of The Gambia’s presidential election.

Bensouda described his selection not as a political prize but as a duty and responsibility to the Gambian people, including those who supported his nomination and those who did not.

“I accept this not as a prize, but as a duty. I accept it as a responsibility to every party and movement that participated in this process,” he said.

“I also accept it as a responsibility to those who supported me and those who did not. Most importantly, I accept it as a responsibility to the Gambian people.”

Addressing supporters and coalition members following his declaration, Bensouda said the occasion represented a significant moment for the country, arguing that the process had been closely watched by Gambians who wanted to see whether opposition politicians could overcome their differences and put national interests ahead of personal ambitions.

He said the coalition had heard the concerns of Gambians who were “tired of political division” and wanted a government that delivers, stronger institutions, greater accountability and restored public trust.

Bensouda also identified corruption, democratic reform and national reconciliation as key issues that the coalition must address if it is elected.

He said national reconciliation should not remain merely a political slogan but should become a way of governing.

The newly declared flag bearer, however, warned coalition members that the conclusion of the flag-bearer selection process marked only the beginning of the coalition’s real work.

He called on the parties and movements to immediately take the coalition’s message across the country, reaching communities, villages and households while engaging supporters, undecided voters and even those who oppose the coalition.

Bensouda urged coalition members to maintain discipline throughout the campaign and avoid attacking coalition partners or other opposition parties.

He also cautioned against reopening old political wounds or allowing individual ambitions to undermine the coalition’s efforts.

“We have only one job: to win the confidence of the Gambian people and to build the Gambia we have promised,” he said.
Bensouda said the coalition’s objective should go beyond simply removing the incumbent government from office.

He argued that Gambians deserve a fundamental change in the way the country is governed, including stronger institutions, greater accountability and reforms to the constitutional and legal framework.

“Our mission cannot simply be to replace one government with another. The Gambian people deserve more than that,” he said.

“Our mission must be to change how government works, build stronger institutions, restore accountability, reform the constitutional and legal framework, and create a government that understands that power is borrowed from the Gambian people.”

His declaration comes after months of negotiations among opposition parties and movements seeking to consolidate their political strength ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

The coalition now faces the challenge of translating its agreement into a united national campaign capable of convincing Gambians across the country.

For Bensouda, the immediate task is clear: maintain unity within the coalition, win public confidence and convince voters that the opposition alliance can offer a fundamentally different approach to governance.

BILBAO FC CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF LATE ALH M .O FAAL SUPER CUP

Bilbao FC have been crowned champions of the Serekunda West Sports Organisation Late Alh M.O. Faal Super Cup after defeating Tababi FC 2-0 in the final on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at the Serekunda West Mini Stadium.

The two sides played out a goalless first half despite creating several scoring opportunities, with neither team able to break the deadlock before the interval.

Bilbao FC returned from the break with greater intensity and were rewarded in the 54th minute when substitute Bangally Tunkara found the back of the net with a fine strike to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Tababi FC responded by pushing for an equaliser, but Bilbao's defence remained composed and resilient as they worked to protect their advantage.

Tunkara then sealed the victory in the 85th minute, completing his brace and putting Bilbao FC 2-0 ahead.

Tababi FC continued to search for a way back into the game during the closing stages, but Bilbao held firm until the final whistle, sparking celebrations among their players and supporters.

As champions, Bilbao FC received a giant trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of D60,000, while runners-up Tababi FC were awarded silver medals and a consolation prize of D35,000.

GOVERNMENT DISMISSES ALLEGATION THAT FIRST LADY TRIED TO STOP OPPOSITION FIGURE FROM BOARDING FERRY

The Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services has taken note of a statement circulating publicly alleging that Her Excellency First Lady Fatoumata Bah-Barrow sought to prevent the National President of the UNITE Party, Mr. Ebrima Dibba, from boarding the ferry to Barra.

The Government wishes to clarify that Mr. Ebrima Dibba was permitted to board the ferry and that at no point was he prevented from accessing the ferry on the instruction of the First Lady.
The allegation that the First Lady sought to use a public ferry service to discriminate against Mr. Dibba on political grounds is therefore false and without basis.

The government wishes to state that Public institutions belong to all Gambians and must
serve all citizens fairly and professionally. The Gambia Ferry Services is no exception.

The Ministry also calls on media organisations and members of the public to verify claims before publishing or circulating them, particularly where such claims have the potential to unnecessarily inflame political tensions.

The Government remains committed to factual, responsible and transparent public communication and encourages all stakeholders to uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness and accountability in public discourse.
