In the latest DRSU episode, “Front Side Attacks,” Roufusport Striking Coach Scott Cushman emphasizes a key principle when defending against the cross: you must match your opponent’s aggression with equal or greater intensity. Simply put, when an opponent throws their power cross, they’re attempting to take control of the exchange and shut down your offense. Your response must be immediate, decisive, and proactive – meeting that attack with a committed defense and an equally sharp counterattack. Passive reactions are not enough. You must answer their forward pressure with confidence, purpose, and the intent to regain control of the engagement.
To execute this effectively, maintain proper fighting range and resist the urge to smother, crowd, or crash into your opponent. By staying in the correct position, you create the space needed to launch your own offense while disrupting their rhythm. Fire your counters with a slightly broken cadence to make your timing less predictable and more difficult to read. Most importantly, your defense must remain at 100% commitment at all times. Never relax it, never compromise it, and never drop it for even a split second. A strong defense is what creates every offensive opportunity, and at Roufusport, defense remains the foundation of everything we do.

In the latest DRSU episode, “Mastering Thai Blocks,” Roufusport Striking Coach Scott Cushman introduces Thai Blocks. This is NOT a beginner technique. Thai Blocks are a mid-to-advanced level defensive system that demands a strong understanding of our core defensive fundamentals. Without that foundation, you will likely struggle throughout the session. Feel free to revisit and rewatch previous defense training sessions before diving into this material, as the concepts build directly upon the fundamentals already covered in prior DRSU lessons.
What makes Thai Blocks such a dangerous and highly effective defensive style is their built-in aggression. Instead of relying on safer defensive tools from previous sessions – like Column Blocking or Parrying Strikes (both extremely effective in their own right) – you aggressively step forward on a slight angle while using your extended arm as a powerful shield to intercept and disrupt your opponent’s punches before they fully develop. This is proactive defense at its finest. As always: rock-solid defense must remain at 100% at all times.

A clean, repeatable rhythm helps fighters stay balanced, efficient, and offensively connected while applying intelligent pressure. But what truly elevates your striking to another level is the ability to change your cadence mid-fight – seamlessly shifting tempo, rhythm, and timing to keep opponents constantly guessing.
This ability makes you highly unpredictable and extremely dangerous, as it becomes very difficult for opponents to read, time, counter, or replicate your attacks once your cadence begins to vary. By mixing fast bursts, delayed shots, broken rhythms, and sudden tempo changes into your combinations, you force hesitation, create openings, and make your offense far more difficult to defend. As always, rock-solid defense must remain at 100% at all times.

In the latest DRSU episode, “Effective Leg Attacks,” Roufusport Striking Coach Scott Cushman emphasizes to the class that powerful leg kicks begin with proper setup – not simply by throwing the kick blindly. A damaging leg kick only lands cleanly and effectively when you initiate your attack from the correct range, incorporate precise footwork to safely close distance, and maintain strong hand defense throughout the entire exchange.
Only then will the kick fully connect, complete its mission, and violently displace the opponent’s leg – disrupting their base, breaking posture, and leaving them vulnerable to immediate follow-up strikes and additional damage. Coach Cush reinforces that every movement must work together seamlessly: footwork, positioning, timing, balance, and defensive awareness.

To move forward effectively while minimizing exposure, you must keep your hands up at all times. As you initiate the attack, maintain strong, disciplined defense by blocking their left strikes with your right hand and their right strikes with your left hand – never the opposite. Everything should stay compact, tight, and controlled as you press forward, with every movement intentional and purpose-driven.
When firing punches or kicks, keep your techniques sharp, precise, and efficient – no wasted motion. Always return promptly to your base stance or defensive shell without overextending or opening up. As Coach Cushman emphasized, “Big movements create big openings” for your opponent, especially when you lose structure or overcommit. Defense stays at 100% – at all times, because the moment you relax is the moment you become vulnerable.

This isn’t just a concept – it’s the foundation of every successful exchange. Control the range, and you control the fight. In today’s class, you’ll drill a full defensive-to-offensive sequence where timing, awareness, and precision all come into play. Punches are thrown to the gloves for safety, but kicks are live – meaning your defense must stay sharp, disciplined, and ready at all times.
This drill is designed to build real fight habits – not just movement, but reaction under pressure. You initiate with a Low Kick. Your partner checks and immediately fires back a Switch Kick. You respond by blocking, then flow seamlessly into your counter: Cross → Hook → Low Kick. Every phase of this exchange demands attention – from your base and balance to your ability to transition from defense into offense without hesitation or pause.
To get the true benefit, this drill must be performed with realistic speed, power, and resistance – while always maintaining control and respect for your training partner.
