Today we conclude our centennial spotlight series with YMCA member Fred Wells! Fred has been a member since 1977 and credits the Y as a key factor in maintaining his health as he nears his 83rd birthday.
“I tell people all the time - if I’m not healthy, I can’t help anybody. So I come here to stay healthy and I like the way it makes me feel. I know this stuff works. There are no guarantees in life, but I want every advantage I can get,” he said.
And, whether working out in the wellness center, recharging in the sauna, or relaxing in the lounge, he believes the ability to connect through conversation is a defining feature of the Y community.
“When you begin to talk to people you realize how small this world is,” Fred said. “There was a woman who I had seen at the Y for about a year or so. When we finally talked a couple of months ago she mentioned going back home for a vacation to Conway, Arkansas. I said ‘Conway? I know somebody from Conway.’ She said “Really, what’s the name?” I mentioned his first name and she goes ‘My uncle George!’ That’s the kind of thing you never would have learned if you didn’t have the conversation.”
We are so thankful for Fred’s dedication to the Y and we wish him and all of our amazing members the best as we begin our second century serving the community.
