Parents, does getting homework started sometimes feel harder than the homework itself? Kids put a lot of energy into their school day. A little structure and encouragement can help them settle in without every evening turning into a struggle.
Here are 3 tips to try this week:
📚 1. Set a predictable start time.
Allow time for a snack and a breather after school, then establish a homework time that fits your family’s schedule. Getting into a routine gives kids a clear expectation.
✏️ 2. Have a homework space ready.
A spot at the kitchen table works! Keep pencils, paper and other supplies nearby, and turn off the TV or put away devices they don’t need for the assignment.
âś… 3. Focus on one manageable step at a time.
Start with one assignment or a few problems, then take a short break when needed. Notice the effort: “You stuck with that even when it got frustrating” means more than only celebrating a correct answer.
At Sasaki’s Kenpo, we give students opportunities to practice focus, perseverance and working through challenges. Homework time is another chance to help those habits grow.
You don’t need a perfect routine. Start with something your family can repeat and adjust as you learn what works for your child.
