CPM-REX 121 is an extremely hard, high-performance powder-metallurgy tool steel known for exceptional edge retention and wear resistance. It can reach around 70–72 HRC, making it harder than most premium knife steels, thanks to its high levels of vanadium, tungsten, carbon, and other alloying elements. The downside is that REX 121 is not stainless, difficult to sharpen, and relatively brittle, meaning it can chip if abused. Originally developed for industrial cutting tools, it has become popular among knife enthusiasts who want extreme edge retention above all else.
