Mark your calendars to get in the holiday spirit Santa Barbara style and head down to the Waterfront for an afternoon and evening of fun at the 36th Annual Parade of Lights!

The theme for this year’s event is “Deck the Hulls” where you can expect a day full of festivities:

12:00 PM – Winter Wonderland on the City Pier in Santa Barbara Harbor with holiday elves, 10 tons of snow, and holiday music. It is rumored Santa may make an appearance!
4:00 PM – The Human-Powered category competition begins with dozens of standup paddlers and kayakers dressed in festive attire who will loop Stearns Wharf spreading holiday cheer
5:00 PM – Holiday tree lighting ceremony will be held on the shoreward finger of Stearns Wharf next to the Sea Center
5:30 PM – Around 30 illuminated watercraft will light up the night as they make their way from Ledbetter Beach down the coast to the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion, then back along the coast to Stearns Wharf
The parade will be capped off by a brief fireworks show. Best viewing locations for the boat parade and fireworks include Stearns Wharf, the breakwater, West Beach, and East Beach.

If you want to check it out, its called “The Spearfishing GIFT GUIDE - Black friday & Christmas ideas 2021”

The ultimate gift for a spearfisherman, the one that says “I really really love you and is investing in the safety and future of anyone you give it to” is a spearfishing course or Freediving course.

We have that course. This weekend starting Friday from 5pm - 9pm, Saturday and Sunday at the Channel Islands! Two slots left!

We then shifted gears to a 🦀 supplied by (thanks Brian) really all we could possibly eat.

We ended the night with all sorts of unorthodox cuts for and including a tuna 👁️ which was surprisingly good and a band making clinic.

At Blue Water Hunter we are always on the lookout for the best products on the market and we are happy to announce Costa sunglasses will be now be offered. Not only are they some of the best sun glasses on the ocean, but they are committed to preserving oceans and waterways while conversing the life within them.

Here are their words: Exploration quenches our thirst for adventure, but there’s more to being a true waterman. It’s our sense of purpose that leaves us truly fulfilled. We are called to seek out a better world by protecting the waters we love and leaving them in a healthier place for generations to come.

KICK PLASTIC
We’ve seen an increasing amount of marine plastic pollution on our adventures. Plastic is not only building up our landfills, but it’s finding its way into our waterways and oceans at an unprecedented rate. Kick Plastic is an initiative launched by Costa in 2015 to help reduce the amount of plastic we use as a brand and to mobilize a movement to encourage others to cut back on the amount of single-use plastic they use as well.

Throwback Thursday…early photo of Simon Severson and me in Lahaina Hawaii. We grew up in the ocean in one form or the other. Simon’s brother Benji and Dan recently launched cloathing line that is “inspired from our history and heritage in a surf culture in our passion for putting brush to canvas into paper and board wave from Baja to Makaha and every ride in between we encourage the creative personality and everyone”.

Amen brother!!!

Fresh shirts from Uroko, our first clothing line that we added and has been a great partner. Here’s a few words from them (Alex):

If you have been riding waves or fishing for any length of time, you often feel like you are a sea creature. It was hard to keep me away from the water, let alone get me out of the water once I finally was in it. Most of my friends were the same way and shared the same feelings as I did. Not much has changed, except now I spend more time at work than by the massive Pacific Ocean that I love.

The Japanese word “uroko” means “fish scales”. I thought it was fitting for a small line of clothes that would represent the passion ocean faring people have in their hearts. If you love the sea or the creatures in it, and perhaps at times feel like a sea creature yourself, then I hope you enjoy the T shirts that I make in celebration of it.

The Friendship Paddle is honored to paddle for a Goleta “Goodland” native. Chris spent his youth wandering our coastal bluffs, exploring the Santa Barbara backcountry, and surfing local breaks. Chris is keenly attuned to the natural beauty and his artwork adorns my house Blue Water Hunter and restaurants, offices, public spaces, and many private homes around Santa Barbara and the world. His art reflects a life centered on healthy living and being present with nature. It encourages us to slow down and appreciate the landscape around us; to pay more attention to its shapes, light, and colors; and to be mindful of the importance of nature on our well-being.

Chris is a loving husband to wife Julie, a father and friend to his son Malakye (15) and his daughter Zenia (13). In 2021, Chris suddenly fell ill and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. Since November 1, 2021, Chris has been unable to breathe regularly, due to a large tumor pressing on his lungs and esophagus. Chris has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments with immunotherapy to follow.

Over the years, Chris has generously donated his art to support countless local charities, schools, and educational programs. To support Chris and his family please click on the link in our bio.

Ed Gillet within a little money or supplies, no support crew and an off-the-shelf sea kayak, paddled alone nearly 2,500 miles from Monterey Bay to Maui in 64 days. No one has ever equaled his feat, before or since, despite numerous failed attempt. I asked him why, what was the Motivation he told me because it was there. What a stud!

The trip was never designed to set a world record, land sponsors or attract media attention. It was simply a voyage Gillet felt he could afford and was capable of accomplishing while still pushing the extreme limit of his physical and mental abilities.
