Between our Oaracle coaches, we have won the Head of the Charles four times. Here are the biggest pieces of advice we have for rowers (of all levels!) racing on the Charles this weekend:
1.) THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Rowing is a sport of individual (or crew) performance.
As rowers, we spend countless hours throughout the year training for one moment on the racecourse. During that race, we are showing up to execute in a way that represents the best version of ourselves. While we race side-by-side and compete with others, we can truly only control our own performance. Don’t go into racing hoping for a miracle - instead, trust the work you’ve put in to carry you through.
2.) ADAPTABILITY IS ESSENTIAL
No matter how well you’ve studied every turn in the course, you WILL end up facing scenarios you don’t expect. Racing, especially head racing, is about making the best decision in the situation you find yourself in. Make one good decision at a time. If you make a mistake, pivot quickly and refocus your attention on the next step.
3.) ASSUME POSITIVE INTENT.
Excitement, nerves, and anxiety are all completely normal feelings to have around a big race. Inevitably, you will likely find yourself in scenarios that are stressful or frustrating - and this is completely okay. Remember, each rower on the course is there because they, too, love this sport! Control the controllables, and focus on making your own performance the very best it can be.
Last but not least, remember: ROWING IS FUN!
